*CRASH*

Madison dove out of the way, narrowly missing the flying vase. She stumbled and winced as the bottom of her foot grazed the glass.

"What the hell, mom!" she said in disbelief. She balanced on one foot, trying to avoid the other pieces that were lying all over the floor.

"Watch your tone with me, young lady! It's not my fault you need to be disciplined. Now go wake up your brothers and make them breakfast." her mother slurred. Her eyes were unfocused, and her footing was wobbly. She paused for a minute and turned around. "And clean up this mess."

Madison couldn't help but roll her eyes. Maybe she could have cleaned up the mess if she wasn't so intoxicated all the time.

She gave out a little sigh, oh well. "Jake and Jullian come downstairs and eat some cereal!" she called. "And watch out for the mess."

They came running downstairs at the mention of food. Madison limped into the bathroom to wash her foot. She cleaned it and wrapped it in a bandage. She couldn't believe her mom just threw a vase at her. This was a new low, even for her. She listened as her mom fawned over her twin brothers and provided them with unnecessary love and attention. Her mother had no problem giving them the love they deserved, but when it came to her, it was a different story. She tried to play it off, but it stung. For her to be yelled at and then for them to be hugged and cuddled? It was unlawful. All she wanted was to be cared for. Was that too much to ask?

Madison put on comfortable shoes and slipped out the door. She looked down at her phone. She was ahead of schedule. School didn't start for another half an hour, so she took a detour to her aunt's coffee shop.

She walked in, and as the sweet aromas hit her, she couldn't help but smile; she loved this place. The ironic coffee-colored walls and comfy chairs gave it a cozy feeling. And the cute, aesthetically pleasing paintings gave it the touch of pizzazz it so desperately needed.

"Hey, what can I get you?" a barista asked.

"I'll have a Vanilla Latte. And can you call Brooklyn for me? Tell her Madison wants to talk to her."

"Yah, sure. Coming right up." The barista said with a smile. She jotted down her order and went to the back room to call Madison's aunt.

"Madison!" said Brooklyn, coming out from the back room. Madison took the hug she was offering and told her about the atrocious events that took place this morning.

"Wow, so it's getting worse, huh?" she asked, looking at her sympathetically.

Madison shrugged, acting like she didn't care. "Yeah."

"I'll stop by and have a little chat with your mom later, okay, sweetie? I want you to keep me posted." she said.

Madison nodded. "And maybe we can talk later?"

"Yeah, it's a date."

Madison gave her another hug and walked out with her Vanilla Latte, so far so good.

Madison was finally here, Marton High School. She stood in front of the building, taking in the fresh air. The building looked amazing. It was grander than the Marton Middle School. Everything looked bigger and better than it did at the middle school. She looked around at the lunch tables and the fields outside. There were so many fields; a soccer field, a football field, and a baseball field. The school's student population wasn't that vast, but the building and surrounding areas were quite the site. There were only 450-500 students, but the view made up for the lack of students. The luscious green fields that had a nice skyline in the background. She stared at the view in awe. She was so enthusiastic to finally be here. This was going to be an awesome year; she could feel it in her bones.

"Madison!" someone called from a distance.

Madison turned around and smiled at the sight of familiar faces.

"Kristen! Betty!" she said, tackling them with a hug. It felt so good seeing her best friends after three long months.

"How was camp?" she asked. She was a little envious she didn't get to go, but she didn't let it show. "You guys look so tan!"

Betty and Kristen smiled at her comment and did a little strut to show off their tan. They all laughed and hugged again. Betty was a blonde, while Kristen was a brunette like Madison. They were all roughly the same size, but Betty had gotten a little thicker over the summer. Madison squeezed them harder. She loved her friends so much, the summer without them was literal torture.

"Let's go in!" said Betty.

They walked into the school and gawked at every speck of dust. Betty spun in place trying to take it all in, and Kristen let out a faint gasp. They weren't used to being in such a gigantic building. They tried to act calm and collected as they walked further into the building, but they weren't fooling anyone; they were all sweating bullets.

They toured the gym, which already smelled like sweaty athletes somehow. Then they stopped by all the classrooms, bathrooms, basement, and even went up to the roof. Most of the school was beautifully colored with their school's colors, red and gold. Madison was getting major vibes from the student government classroom. She heard it calling for her begging for her to take the lead and sit at the front desk. Don't worry, I'll come back for you later she thought to herself as they left the class.

After a while, they finally made their way towards the cafeteria which had a gigantic painting of the school's mascot with the words, "Go Marton Tigers!" It was a lot to take in.

"Look," said Kristen, "Nayla's already sitting by herself."

They all took a glance at Nayla, who was, in fact, sitting alone at a back table using her phone. She had quite a reputation for sitting by herself. Betty let out a snort and Madison strode up to her with her friends in tow.

"Wow Nayla, you've already accepted that you're a loser, and no one wants to sit by you huh?" Madison asked. She looked her up and down in pure loathing.

Nayla looked up from her phone and glanced at the three of them one by one. She shrugged silently and strode off without a word.

"What a loser," said Betty loud enough for her to hear. And with that comment, Nayla started walking faster and faster till she was out of sight.

Madison laughed as Nayla ran away. She had always hated her. She was just always so happy. No matter what was going on, it was aggravating. And she was such a teacher's pet. She didn't deserve half of the grades she got. Madison just didn't vibe with Nayla. Everyone has that one person who they don't like, even if it was for no reason. Something about Nayla just bugged her. And she was just so captivating with her caramel skin and brown eyes. And how did she pull off that headscarf? Argh. Whatever, Madison wasn't about to let her ruin her first day.
