Chapter 24: An Emergency.. Of Sorts

Start from the beginning

"Wait, what?" Harry raises his voice, drawing all our attention.

I look at him, his face full of confusion. "He's your boyfriend." He states.

"No, he isn't." I correct him. "Never was. Now can you let go of me please?"

"What? You aren't... No. Ava I..."

"Liam, can we dance please?" I cut Harry off, desperate for any sort of escape available.

"Yes." He responds as I pull him with me, towards the dance floor.

"That was quite a reaction." Liam speaks up once we are on the dance floor.

"When he hugged me he told me I looked beautiful."

"And how does complimenting you make him an asshole exactly?" Liam asks as he moves us across the dance floor.

"You know why."

Liam nods, looking at me thoughtfully, "I do, but Harry doesn't. Did you see the look on the lads face? It's like someone slaughtered a litter of puppies."

"Serves him right."

"Ava?" We both look over to see Jenna standing next to us, "Sorry, but we need you in the kitchen, it's a bit of an emergency."

"Lovely." I sigh, looking back at Liam. "Sorry, but I have to go make sure this evening doesn't get worse than it already is."

I head towards the kitchen quickly, hoping I don't find Margaret berating the cook again. I turn towards Jenna to find out what the problem really is, but she's no longer next to me. I spot her several feet behind, helping a very drunk guest make it to a table.

I go on without her, walking through the house, past the living room, and into the kitchen.

"Jenna said there was a problem?" I direct my question towards the chef who just points towards the garage.

I look at him confusedly as I walk across the kitchen and through the garage door. I make it only a few steps inside before I hear the door being slammed behind me, making me jump.

I turn around, feeling anger wash over me the second I do so.

"Why are you upset with me?" Harry asks, looking deep into my eyes.

"Are you really doing this? Did you really get my assistant to lie to me to get me back here?"

"Course I did. You're mad at me and I needed to fix it. Now tell me why."

I sigh, looking at the man standing in front of me. His eyes are crinkled in worry and his cheeks are flushed pink. I curse myself as I look him over, taking in his tailored black suit with a black dress shirt on underneath it.

"He's not your boyfriend?"

My eyes snap back up to meet his, "No Harry."

"But I thought..." He looks down at his feet, "I thought he was."

"We went on a few dates, but it didn't work out."

"Why?" He looks back up at me.

"Harry..."

"Did you sleep with him?" He asks, his voice sad.

"Thats a bit of a personal question." I really can't believe him, asking me something like that.

"God Ava... please... please just tell me." His eyes plead me.

"No, I didn't sleep with him." I answer him quietly. "Of course I didn't. I didn't even kiss him."

Harry lets out a deep breath, "You never told me you weren't dating him."

"You never asked." I shrug.

"I wish you had. That's the only reason she's here." He looks me in the eyes, biting his lip. "I thought he would be here with you... I didn't want to come alone. If that makes any sense."

I nod, "Wow, I feel bad for the girl."

"Don't. She's a lesbian." Harry gives me a small smile. "Who apparently has a thing for Liam Hemsworth."

"What would her girlfriend say?" I shake my head, trying to keep a smile off my face after learning his date means nothing.

"Well, the girlfriends bi so I'm guessing she'd be chuffed to throw him into the mix." Harry smirks as I roll my eyes at him. "So why am I am arsehole?"

I look away from him, feeling fairly embarrassed about the whole thing.

"That made me feel absolutely wretched, you calling me that."

"I'm sorry."

"So why?"

"I... Well.." My voice fades off as I try to think of a response that doesn't make me sound like a crazy person.

"Wow... you still can't do it can you?"

I look up at him, finding a frown on his face. I hate seeing him frown, especially when I have something to do with it.

"You drive me mad." He lowers his voice to try to hide the anger laced in it.

But I can hear it plain as day, telling me one thing and one thing only.

This night is about to get worse.
