***Shawn's POV***

"I can't believe I agreed to do this with you losers," Y/N's best friend, Eliza, grumbles from the backseat, her head lying against the car window as I slowly drive up the mountain where we had planned our camping trip.
"I can't believe you haven't said a positive thing since you got in the car two hours ago," Y/N retorts, sticking her tongue out in the mirror.
"Hey, you're the one that dragged me here, knowing that I am happiest lying in bed watching The Office on repeat. My mood is on you."
Y/N rolls her eyes but there's a soft smile playing on her lips. "Whatever." She turns to me. "Are we nearly there?"
"Yep. We should be here... now!" I exclaim as I pull up to the site, empty except for an old couple sitting outside their tent.

There's silence for a few seconds before Brian, my best friend who I had almost forgotten was in the car, speaks. "Shawn?"
"Mhmm?"
"I thought we weren't using a tent."
"Change of plans. Now let's set up before it starts raining," I say pointing to the darkening sky and bolt out of the car before I'm hit by the shoe Eliza is aiming at me.

I'm surprised to see Y/N already opening the boot when I reach the back of the car, I presumed that considering I didn't tell her, my own girlfriend, about my decision, she'd be mad. Which is why the small smile and twinkle in her gorgeous Y/E/C eyes confuse me.
"You shouldn't have done that." She shakes her head, but still pulls me into a hug, her head resting on my chest.
"I know." I say, burying my head in her hair.
"But I can understand why you did it."
I smile. "I know." Ever since the four of us started hanging out together, a month or so after Y/N and I first began dating, it's been pretty obvious that Eliza and Brian like each other, at least to us. There's only so much staring at each other while the other isn't looking and blushing that a person can take. So I've decided to do something about it, since it doesn't look like either Eliza nor Brian will be making moves anytime soon. Besides, both have chose to portray their feelings in the most annoying way possible - winding the absolute crap out of each other, which was fun at first, but now, not so much.

Time flies by as we set up our site, which consists of two tents, a makeshift fire, and little else. It's not much, but it's enough for us. Before we know it, the sky is a thunderous grey and a blanket of clouds ready to unleash a downpour like no other on us, the glittering stars and moon hidden from our straining view as the night draws nearer. This is not what I expected to happen, which is clear from my choice of packing tents.

Another problem that I stupidly did not think through was sleeping arrangements. Obviously, the ideal solution would be that I share with Y/N, since she's my girlfriend. However, when I bring this up as we sit around the campfire it doesn't look very likely that I'll get my way.
"You've got to be kidding me. I'm sorry, man, but I'm not sleeping in the same tent as Eliza. She snores!" Brian protests immediately.
"How would you know if I snore or not?" Eliza retorts, a blush slowly creeping up her face.
"A wild guess." He rolls his eyes, a very bad move judging by the fury in Eliza's own eyes.
"You're wrong." She seethes.
"Sure."
"You are."
"Uh huh."

"I'm starting to regret my bright idea of bringing two tents," I whisper into Y/N's ear, my arms tightening around her as we sit together opposite our two bickering friends.
"So am I." She sighs, pulling the blanket around us up to her chin.
She's about to say something else but Eliza shouting at Brian interrupts. "Thou can sucketh my dicketh." She prods his chest with her finger before storming into one of the tents, leaving my friend looking slightly guilty behind her.
"I better check on her," Y/N says, twisting around to kiss my cheek. "Goodnight, Shawn."
"Goodnight, baby." I kiss her forehead, tucking her hair behind her ear. "I love you!" I say as she walks away.
"Thanks!" She shouts back, grinning.
Feigning hurt, I grab her hand, pulling her back into my chest. "What did you say?" I say, locking my eyes with hers.
"I love you too." She rolls her eyes, a smile dancing on her plump lips.
"Mhm. Thought so." I smirk, my eyes darting to her lips before I lean in and kiss her softly.
"Geez guys, get a room!" Brian moans, throwing a marshmallow at us from the packet.
"Can't. You and Eliza foiled that plan," Y/N retorts as she walks away, middle finger up.
I love that girl.

*****

I'm woken in the middle of the night by someone tapping my shoulder, the cacophonous noise of a thunderstorm evident in the background.
"Shawn?" A small voice whispers, shaking my shoulder.
"Y/N?" I croak, rubbing my eyes. "What's wrong?"
"I-" Her voice cracks and for the first time I notice the fear in her tired eyes. Suddenly, I remember one night at her house a few months ago when she confessed her great fear of thunder to me. I must be the biggest idiot alive.
"C'mere." I unzip the sleeping back and open my arms. Without hesitation she climbs in beside me, her chest against mine, and I quickly zip up the sleeping bag again to keep the heat inside, which presses us together even more. I wrap my arms tightly around her trembling body and she buries her head in my shoulder, which is when I notice she's crying.
"Hey, hey, shhh," I whisper, lightly brushing her hair with my fingers as my other arm remains secure around her. "Shhh, darling, don't cry."
"I'm sorry," I hear her whisper, her sobs subsiding.
"You have nothing to be sorry for." I press my lips to her forehead and continue whispering comforting words to her as she calms down and stops shaking.

The thunderstorm continues all through the night, resulting in a very fitful night's sleep for both of us, me waking every time Y/N does, her jumping from a sudden clap of thunder. Neither of us make any attempt to move so she remains in my arms all night, clutching my hoodie in shaking fists. It's only in the morning that we notice that Brian's not in his sleeping bag beside me and we hear giggling in the next tent. Maybe my poorly thought-through plan did work after all.
