"No, it's fine, Meredith. I'll help." This just gave Sophie another thing she could do instead of think about Fitz. Or Nick. Or the Nick-Fitz thing.
Meredith slumped back against the couch, her relief obvious in the breath she let out. "Thank you so much Sophie, I really need the volunteer hours."
"No problem. If I can just ask one thing; why do you hang out with them anyway? You seem way too nice to be hanging out around those... dirtbags."
"Honestly? I don't know. I've known them since kindergarten, and we've always hung out together. But recently they've stopped inviting me to stuff, and talk about how much fun they have when I'm not around. But I just keep telling myself that I'm only here for three more years, and then I can move away. Far, far, away."
Meredith looked off into the distance, as if she could see her future. Sophie wished she had a dream that was actually realistic. She wished that she could settle down in one place for the rest of her life instead of probably having to move around like the Cullens did. She wished she didn't have an all-consuming headache all the time. Most of all, she wished she with her family. In Havenfield. She wished she could play base quest with her friends, and eat snacks with Iggy. But none of those things were possible, if she wanted to keep her identity a secret and keep her family safe.
"Meredith, do you want to stay for dinner? Dad's probably cooking something, or microwaving something. Actually, we're probably just going to order pizza." The two girls laughed together before Meredith nodded.
"That sounds nice, Sophie. I'd love to stay."
I'm not going to say any excuses because I don't want to write them and you don't want to hear them. But I updated!
I also have a few other outfits for consideration for the dance.
