Sang P.O.V (10 years ago)

I was alone in the park watching the other kids play. They were laughing and screaming with delight as their parents swung them higher and higher. Their faces filled with pure joy as they climbed higher and higher seeing the world from a different perspective. I sat on a lone swing with no parent to push me higher until I was screaming with joy. I could only feel the beating mommy has given me the day before.

I couldn't hate my mommy though. I still loved her even though everyday she told me she didn't love me back. I loved her even though she beat me as I begged her to stop. I couldn't hate my mommy, after all she is my only mommy.

I looked down at my bruised hands. I tugged at the sleeves of my sweater that was hiding my bruises. I couldn't let anyone else see. Others might worry and start to question mommy, and she would probably beat me more.

As I was distracted with my thoughts, I quickly snapped out of it as I heard someone approaching. I looked up with fright when I spotted a boy my age sitting near me. His eyes looked clouded with his thoughts and he seemed to not notice me. I shrank into myself hoping he would not notice me and eventually move on, but that was only a wish.

My movement seemed to alarm him as his head snapped up and his shoulders tensed. If possible, I shrank into myself even more curling up into a ball. His eyes immediately softened a little when he spotted me.

He stood up and I immediately flinched. When he saw my movement, he immediately stopped. I closed my eyes waiting for the blow. When I didn't feel anything, I slowly opened my eyes and looked up. The boy was closer now, but not so close that he would touch me.

Nervous, I used my finger and pushed my lip against my teeth. His gaze followed my action and it seemed to bother him. I didn't want to anger him more, so I immediately stopped. A small "sorry" escaped from my lips. I looked down not meeting his gaze.

I felt movement above me but I did not dare to look up. I was too frightened that he would hit me. Then suddenly, I heard a couple girls talking from the playground.

"Eww! Is that the girl Marie is always talking about? Ugh! She probably has cooties! We should tell the others to stay away from her so that they wouldn't get cooties."

I looked down sad that my own sister would spread rumors about me. The boy in front of me seemed to be listening as his fists tightened in silent anger.

I knew that gesture, that was the move mommy made when father stopped her from hitting me. That only happened once when he warned mommy that the plumber would be at our house soon. After that though she beat me harder than she had ever had in my life.

Afraid the boy would hurt the girls, he finally looked up at him. He was tall for my age. His eyes looked haunted but he hid them well. Without thinking, I took a hold of his hand and he seemed surprised of my gesture. I was too, but I couldn't risk anyone getting hurt.

I looked up at him pleadingly and his fists finally loosened. I looked back into his eyes and was about to let go if his hand but he quickly took hold of it again.

I wanted to pull away from his touch, but it was so warm and comforting. Somewhere in my mind, I knew I should trust him and that was exactly what I did.

"What's your name?" he said breaking the silence.

"S-Sang" was all I said while looking down to the ground.
