4 | Death by Cinnamon

Start from the beginning

I can't go to the emergency room. I can't!

I was still clutching Nate's hand as they tried to pry it away from his. My eyes were pleading... don't let me go there. I was starting to lose consciousness when they stuck a needle in my arm. My grip loosened and immediately fell to the side.

"Did you just drug her?" an angry voice asked. Nate?

"Don't worry, it's mandatory in her case," someone explained. "She was never going to let go."

A dull ache in my head woke me up. I still had the mask on and one side of my face was feeling hot. I reached to touch it when I saw the IV stuck on me. Great. I took on the surroundings and noticed that I was in my usual room.

"You're in the hospital," a voice said. Nate.

I removed the mask and answered him. "I know. This is practically my own suite. I go for the holidays here."

"Nice," Nate said with a smirk. "Just a few hours ago, you looked like you were dying and now you're back to your sarcastic self."

"Death by cinnamon. Not a good way to go," I mumbled.

"Yeah, I'm sorry about that," he said. "I didn't know."

"You can still go to jail if you didn't know. If a murderer comes to court and says that he's unaware of the law that he can't kill, would you let him go?" I asked.

He narrowed his eyes and I thought he was going to snap but he just grinned. "You've been watching too much CSI stuff, huh?"

"No," I said.

"Oh."

"It's actually NCIS."

He laughed and looked at me. "I could actually claim self defense, you know. If I go to trial, I could tell them that you were about to attack me with your spoon and I used the cinnamon as a diversion, fully intending only a distraction but was unaware of the fact that it could actually harm you."

I arched one of my eyebrows and clapped my hands.

"I watch Suits," he said in explanation.

"Me too," I said excitedly.

"I should've known," he said as he continued to smirk at me.

What? Mike Ross is hot and who wouldn't watch him?

I coughed and realized that my throat was very dry. Nate shot from his seat and approached me.

"It's fine," I reassured between coughs. "I think I just need to drink some water."

"I'll get it for you," he suggested.

"You don't have a choice because if something happens to me again, people would suspect," I joked.

"Very funny," he said and glared.

He came back holding a glass of water and helping me sit up. The water quenched my thirst and somehow made me feel a whole lot better. He put the empty glass on the bedside table and sat on his chair next to my bed.

"So, when can I go home?" I asked him.

"I don't know but I overheard earlier that your Mom's decided to let you skip school today. I don't know about tomorrow though," he said.

"Oh," I said. Of course my mom would let me skip school. She never wanted me there in the first place. "How about you? Why did you skip school. You could've went home last night."

He shrugged and gave me an almost apologetic smile. "Felt wrong to just leave you here when I was the one who caused this in the first place."

I was a little bit shocked that Nate could even be this serious about something.

"That's very... noble of you," I commented.

"I was born to be noble," he said and smirked. And there was the Nate I knew!

There was a comfortable silence that filled the room as both of us just inhaled the air. Neither of us felt the need to talk and it was what I needed. I wasn't up for a conversation when I just got out from the emergency room.

Minutes have past as I continued to stare at the window. As I glanced at my side, Nate was sleeping on his chair. He looked so peaceful with his head resting on the cushion of the chair. I remembered last night when he held me in his arms and stroked my hair. It felt... good. I've never felt like that since... her.

I stared at him as he slept and only removed my gaze when my mom went inside.

"Honey, I didn't know you were awake," she said. "How long have you been up?"

"I don't know," I said honestly.

She just smiled and sat on my bed. She glanced at Nate's sleeping figure and smiled at me. "He's perfect."

I knitted my eyebrows and looked at my mom quizically. "What?"

Mom stroked my face and hugged me. "I was about to tell you last night but since you had an attack, I... we haven't had the chance to tell you. Both of you."

"What are you talking about, Mom?" I asked.

"You're... It's been decided that you're going to marry him," she explained slowly.

Marry? What on freaking Earth?!

"Who?!" I asked, almost demanding an answer.

My mom stared at my eyes and said, "Nate."
