My buddy  BooksAreMyKryptonite made the awesome cover, all credit goes to her!

I wake sometime before the sunrise. The bad feeling of mine didn't wake me. Pain did. I clenched my fists and gasped as a sharp edge of a knife slid through my ribs. The knife felt so real, but yet nothing was there. I could feel the weapon plunge itself deeper into flesh. I screamed out, tears leaking from my eyes. In the haze of pain, I could faintly make out Logan doubled over on the ground, groaning as I was. I could almost hear someone screaming, not knowing if it was me. Gripping the sheets, I tried to fight it, yelling who knows what. The pain suddenly disappeared, but something much worse came over me. It was almost like apart of me died. I felt so much sadness, tears poured from my eyes. The pain had numbed all feeling, making me incapable of moving. I was stuck holding my arms and legs close to my chest.

My heart pounded as my breaths remained quick and shallow. I lay there for many moments trying to keep myself together. A long time later Logan comes to me and grips my arm. I'm so sickened all I can do is stare at him. "One of the eight is dead,"he says quietly.

"Who," I whisper.

He shakes his head not saying anything. I blink slowly, feeling as if all of my energy was drained from my body. So this is what it felt to die. Whoever this person was, I was sorry for him. I knew what his last moments of life felt like. He died in pain. Horrifying pain. Pain that stops you from doing anything other than lying on the ground screaming.

I slowly sit myself up as a wave of headaches come over me. I look at the ground trying to blink the swirling stars from my eyes. I feel Logan standing beside me, holding my arm. He helps me to my feet and hesitates before lifting me up and carrying me outside to the truck. I black out before he gets me there.

The next time I wake its almost daylight. The sun slowly peeps over the horizon like a child hiding from the seeker. My head still buzzed from the remains of a migraine. I glance over at Logan, still sore from the horrible pain from last night. He notices me. "You alright?"

"Honestly, no," I reply blinking slowly.

There's a pause. "So when you meant that we are connected, you really meant it,"

"Yes. When one of us gets injured, all of us do, and when one of us dies, we all feel it,"

I nod, as last night's memory replayed itself sharply in my mind. So when my arm felt sore, someone must have broken it. Or when my foot hurt or the stings of scrapes that weren't there, it was all from one of the eight. Seven. Now there were only seven of us. "How much farther?" I ask, suddenly curious of the safe place that he mentioned a while back.

"Were close, maybe a couple hours drive,"

I nod and stare out the window. I wondered what it was like at this safe place. Where some of the others there? The sky brightens to the dull, yet beautiful sky blue. The sun shines in the corner of my vision reflecting hazy rings of light in the window. Trees grow ever thinner. The aspens have long been replaced by massive oaks and sweet gum trees. The cars around us grow in number, whipping by while some kept pace. In the distance behind massive fields I see a city of tall sky rises. The buildings appear to be twigs hugging the horizon.

The trees now grow in small orchards scattered in the high swaying grasses. I see dozens of horses eating in the golden stalks. A young foal prances around its mother. Vexation seems to flare in the mare's nostrils. I see the city grow closer then fade out again as Logan changes roads. I drift off to another world, where everyone lives peacefully and know one dies. Where I see my mother again. Logan's voice snaps me out of the day dream. "We're here,"

I jump and stare in all directions. The dust from the dirt road laces the windshield like smoke. A house like mine appears at the end of the road. It seems like hours, before Logan parks outside. This was where I would be safe.
