Chapter 4 ~ Revived

Start from the beginning

There was a voice, but the words blur into one, I couldn't decipher them. After a moment of staring into nothing, ears ringing, a hand grabs my head and turns it straight. Infinite's face – his real face – was there again. A part of me felt horrible for him, needing to save me. My damn enemy.

Slowly I am able to make out what he was saying. "... what have you done?" ... "Don't do that again! I have tried the same thing, it's not worth it!"

What...?

Has he attempted the same thing I have? Is that Infinite is acting so strange around the topic?

"Why... did you... save me?" I managed to mutter through small, slow breaths. "Why not let me... die?" My eyes were slowly going back into my head.

Infinite's eyes search mine, unsure of what to do. He seemed conflicted. What emotion what in his eyes? Concern? "Would you have let someone die if you had the chance of saving them?" he replied. Did he really just say that? A villain? Someone who has killed others at the command of Eggman?

"But, you're..." I was going to point out that he wouldn't do such a petty act: mercy. But I couldn't find the energy to continue speaking. My head went limp in Infinite's hand, and my eyes were barely being held open. It was then I noticed my hands were uncuffed and by my sides. Probably to make the CRP easier to give. The Resistance fighter in me yelled at me to try and punch him, or to do something, but my body parts wouldn't respond to my commands. My system felt as though it was falling into a comatose state, numb and immovable. Yet filled with pain and fear.

"Evil," I gasp out the rest of my sentence, closing my eyes. The hand that still held my head slowly lied me down. I heard Infinite's body shift, and my head was resting on something. His lap?

Why is he acting like this? I wonder through my sleep-craving headache.

"'Evil'..." Infinite repeats, muttering to himself. "I suppose you want to understand why I did the things I did."

Infinite sighs. "When the doctor found me, I was a wreck. Barely living. The experiments of the Phantom Ruby nearly killed me, but I had believed I deserved the pain. I would constantly overuse the Ruby's power in combat or in training, which took its toll on my physical form." He was silent for a moment. I tried to analyze what he was telling me, somewhat shocked that he was actually going through with telling me all this information. He seems... sad. Lost. Like he had believed he had committed sins that he needs to be punished although he hasn't become the villain yet. But even if he did become "the villain", I doubt they would punish themselves. They are always self-indulgent and only care for their own wellbeing. They wouldn't willingly hurt themselves. Or allow punishment in any form.

"After allowing few too many soldiers to live, and other acts of questionable loyalty, the doctor had tried to alter the Phantom Ruby so that I would be forced to follow his commands. Unfortunately, the Ruby was not merely some piece of technology that the doctor can just program to do his bidding. And his... 'plan' didn't quite work." Infinite's hand touches my forehead, a sharp pain shoots through me as his fingers find the indent in my head. I wince, eyes opening ever so slightly. Infinite seemed so calm when I looked up at him. My head was rested in his lap, he was cross-legged, I think. His eyes seemed to be recalling everything he was saying, which gave me a feeling that he couldn't be making this all up or bending the truth. Infinite's eyes were staring at the blood on my forehead, I felt him wipe some blood off with his thumb. It was still strange to see him without a mask covering his face.

My eyes roll back under their lids again, exhaustion taking its toll again. But I was still scared. I was in such a weak state. And Infinite obviously has the upper hand. I still don't understand why he wouldn't have just let me die. And even if he did revive me, why not just walk away after putting me in a straightjacket so I can't hurt myself again?
