First.

I am Alyssa, 1st year AB Psychology Student, Chess Varsity Player. Ateneo de Manila University.

I already have been studying here for 3 months now. And I am quite getting used to it. I am becoming more familiar in places here in Quezon City and Manila. My mom also visited for a week on my first month to check my dorm and they had allowed me to bring my car here so I wouldn't have to commute.

Study-Practice-Eat-Sleep, those are the only activities I have. But don't get me wrong, I already have friends. And we go out when we have free time. I even have friends who are also varsity players in different sport, like Marge. She is a volleyball player and my classmate in one of my subjects.

One time sinama niya ko sa gym, feel daw nila maglaro. Kaya she, along with some of her teammates, decided to play.

"Guys, this is Aly. She's a chess player.", Marge introduces me.

"Aly, these are some of my team mates, Jia, Mich, Ella, Amy, Mae, Den, Giz, Aeriel, Ate Dzi, and Ate Jem, ..."

"Hi!!!", they said in unison.

"Hi", I smiled back.

"Maglalaro ba siya?", Ella asked.

"Huh? Ayy, hindi. Sumama lang ako para manood." I replied with matching waving my hand.

"Hala, edi kulang tayo isa...", said Jia.

"Maglaro ka na lang din, Aly. Marunong ka ba?", it is Mae, if I am not mistaken, asked.

"Marunong lang. But compare to you all..haha. Hindi ako magaling."

"That's okay. Laro laro lang naman, pampalipas oras."

And guess what, gusto ko rin naman talaga maglaro. Kaya I said yes.

The game went well, kahit papano nakasabay naman ako. Pero syempre, in terms of stamina, talo ko. Ang liliksi talaga nila palibhasa banat sa practice.

"Wow, are you first year rin ba?", two girls from the bench asked, walking towards us nang matapos yung game.

"Ate Gretch, Ate Fille...", Marge greeted dun sa two girls.

"Nope, Ate Gretch, actually she's a chess player. Ang galing niya noh?", Ella said, smiling at me.

"Yeah, you're really great there! I mean those spikes, wow." the other girl whom they said is Fille, said.

"I was playing volleyball before in Negros."

"You should join the team!"

"Oh, no, no. I am already playing chess."

"Ahh, sayang. Super...", their faces were all covered with sadness.

"But thank you for the compliments."

And we said goodbyes after that. I went straight to my chess practice, which I almost got late.

The next day, sinama ako ni Marge sa gym. They'll be having practice daw and since I have nothing to do, sumama ako.

I was sitting in the bleacher when I saw the chinita girl yesterday talking to a guy and pointing at me. And then the man approached me. He introduced himself as Roger Gorayeb, coach of the women volleyball team.

"Nasabi nila na magaling ka daw. Ayaw mo ba mag try maglaro for the team?"

"Varsity na rin po kasi ako sa chess."

"I see, sayang naman. Tingin ko magaling ka talaga, kasi yun mga yun...", he pointed to Marge and the other girls, "ipinagmamalaki ka talaga, agawin daw kita sa chess. Haha."

"Kung pwede lang naman po na maglaro ako sa volleyball and chess, I would love to po e.", I joked. I mean, I love those two sports; it is just that, it is the staff coach of the chess who recruited me.

"What if? Kaya mo ba? Mahigpit ba training sched sa chess?"

I was surprised. Is he serious?

"I - I...I mean -" I replied quite stuttering.

"I see, biro lang pala, haha, sayang. But in case you change your mind, hija, you can transfer," he smiled then he stood up and about to go back to the team.

"What if sir I can manage? Is it possible?", of course, I cannot just ditch chess and jump to volleyball, I owe it a lot so if I wanted to join the volleyball team, I also have to stay in chess.

It was his turn to be surprised.

"I never had encountered a student playing for two sports. But we can ask the director ng athletics affairs."

"Sabihan niyo lang po ako if i-mi-meet na natin yun director.", I smiled widely at him.

"I'll inform him later, as well as your coach in chess, para baka bukas makapag usap na."he smiled and when he turned his back, he looked at me again, "do you want to play muna?".

Kinabukasan, I was called in a meeting with the Director of Athletic Affairs, Director of Student Affairs, my Chess Coach and Coach Roger. At first, they were hesitant about the idea, pero dahil sa convincing power ko, Ahemmm...pinayagan nila ako with certain conditions nga lang na hindi maapektuhan ang studies lalo na hindi ito magiging risk para sa health ko.

At mabilis na lumipas ang isang taon, sobrang busy pero nakakatuwa, I feel so proud of myself! Nakasurvive ako ng isang taon na na maintained ang grades ko kahit sobrang busy sa sports. Mas naging close na rin ako sa mga teammates ko, ngayon nga roommates na kami ni Den, ka team ko sa volleyball...
