SECOND CHAPTER: THE MORNING AFTER

After contemplating waking up for the past 15 minutes I finally decided to open my eyes. The bright sunlight seeping out from behind the, not so greatly, closed curtain caused me to let out an undeniable string of curses.
The bump on the back of my head was throbbing so bad.

I slowly raised my head. My legs swung over the side of the bed. With lots of grunting and groaning I reached the bathroom door. My ankle felt like it weighed a ton. The dark purple bruise caused by the bump on my head had made its way to the corner of my eye. It didn't look like it was gonna fade anytime soon.

If I'm going to feel like shit, I'm at least gonna make the best of it. I turned the shower on and took of the way too oversized shirt I got from Alec. Careful not to scrape it against my head and with the sound of the water droplets hitting the bathroom floor, I didn't hear someone coming in. The bathroom door swung open and a loud gasp made it known that they hadn't expected me to be in here. Naked...

Within a second they had turned their head and slammed the door closed behind them. They couldn't have seen much, and even then they wouldn't care.

"Breakfast is ready." a squeaky voice proclaimed from behind the bathroom door.

I stifled a laugh and stepped foot in the shower. The water cascading down my back made me feel somewhat like a normal person again. My mind wandered back to yesterday. Not having family in town since moving here all by myself is hard sometimes. I'm glad Alec and Jack are such good friends and help me out whenever.

I arrived downstairs, hair still wet and back in the shirt that Alec gave me, as my own was torn from my fall yesterday. Alec was stood behind the kitchen island cooking some eggs as Jack was sat at the table typing away on his laptop. His forehead creased, clearly focused on whatever he was doing. My eyes wandered back to Alec. "You want bacon with your eggs?"

"No, thank you. Just eggs is fine." I dragged myself to the dining table. Still not even close to walking like a normal functioning human again. I sighed when I finally sat down. My head in my hands as I heard my heartbeat ringing loudly in my ears. The concentrated eyes of Jack finally met mine.  "You can go to bed again after breakfast. It's gonna take a couple of days before you feel well again."

I was gonna be so productive today. That's what I planned. Spent the last few weeks working way too much and didn't have time to paint. I wanted to add to my portfolio, so I can maybe go to art school next year. If my work is even close to being good enough. I guess it's gonna have to wait till I'm feeling better. Luckily I don't have to work till Wednesday, as I took a couple of days off.

"Yeah, I will. My head is throbbing and my ankle feels like it's going to fall of any second now."

"You need to be more careful then." Jack said while mindlessly looking at his screen.

"I was careful! I always am. You just don't expect luggage randomly thrown across the hallway. This could have happened to you too, you know."

"No, it couldn't have."

"What do you mean it couldn't have. Are you saying that I'm stupid?! Cause I'll tell you what... The only person that's stupid here is Alec for even keeping up with your stupid..." A warm hand suddenly placed on my shoulder made me stop in the midst of my rant.

"Here are your eggs. Don't listen to him. He's just trying to rile you up. And put your laptop away Jack." With a confirming eye roll he put his laptop away.

Now with Alec also seated at the table we each quietly ate our food. "Who came to get me this morning?" Now just remembering what had happened and still not knowing who the culprit was.

Almost shameful eyes met the surface of the dining table. Alec croaked out a small "me". He almost seemed frustrated. Why was he acting so strange?

There was no time to think about it further. Jack's eyes met mine. "Alec is gonna do some work at the office, so he won't be home till dinner tonight. I'm gonna get some work done here. I'll stay at home in case you need me. I'll come check on you every few hours, just shout if you need me. Alec will look after you tonight just like last night."

He was sat staring at me, waiting for an answer. "Alright. Then I'm going to bed. My head is still pounding."

"Do you need me to help with dinner tonight?" Alec and Jack both simultaneously shook their heads.

"Jack will cook tonight. He is the better one of us two. Anything you would like to eat?"

"All is fine with me. Just nothing with tuna. Just thinking about it right now is making me sick."

"If I didn't know better I might have just thought you had sex and gotten pregnant. But we both know better don't we." He said with a sickly smirk on his face.

"Everything compared to your number is low. So I'm taking it as a compliment." Everyone knew that Jack had been pretty 'generous' before meeting Alec. Rumor even got around that whilst they were together they had some adventures. But I've only known them for a short period of time.

I had lived here for at least six months before ever meeting them. Alec was always busy with work. Only newly starting his own business. Whatever it is that he does, I don't know. Something with numbers and consulting people on their finances. At least he's great at what he does. Now already managing a company with at least a hundred employees.

Jake is a doctor at the hospital nearby. I think he also manages some of the staff there. He's quite handsome and I can't tell you how many people specifically book their appointments with him, just to see if they can catch his eye. Pathetic honestly. Later realizing he's gay and still they don't stop.

We talked for a bit till Alec had to leave. I not so gracefully walked back upstairs. Ready to take another much needed nap. Slowly I dozed of thinking about whatever new things I could paint. My mind kept wandering back to Jack and Alec. With my head pounding and my ankle throbbing I finally fell asleep.
