Chapter Nine:

Jenna’s POV:

“Jenna! Hurry up!” Ember screamed on the other side on the bathroom door.

“I’m not coming out!” I yelled.

I am not going to the party, wearing this.

“I gave it to you as a present! Do you want to hurt my feelings?” Ember taunted, banging on the door.

I groan before opening the door and stepping out of the bathroom.

“Oh my gosh!” Ember squeals. “You look so.. sexy!”

Sexy? I don’t think so. Ember bought me a black, sleeveless, flare dress with a leather bodice and round neckline. (Thank god it wasn't a v-neck!)

This is going to be a horrible night.

We get in Ember’s car and drove to her house. Big Momma, Leo and Mr. Parker were already there, setting up everything.

“Okay, us, ‘grown ups’ will be having our own party next door for Mr. Parker’s retirement. So, remember, I can come in here anytime.” Big Momma warned before giving me a hug.

“Don’t worry, everything’s going to be great!” Leo and Ember both smirk gruesomely, as Mr. Parker and Big Momma walk next door.

“Party time!” Ember shouts.

I roll my eyes, sitting on the couch. I wasn’t in the mood to party. It was my first birthday without them. If it was up to me, I wouldn’t be having this party, but Ember insisted I had to since it was my sixtinth.

People began arriving 30 minutes later. Some brought food, others snuck in beer.

“Ember.” I grabbed her arm and took her aside. “I thought you said you didn’t invite that many people! What happened to the list! And Big Momma said no drinking! She’s right next door!”

“Jenna, relax! I may have invited of few more people, but it’s your 16th birthday! Big Momma won’t find out! It’s just beer!”

This is why I hate parties. I look around. Everyone’s drinking out of red cups, stuffing food in their mouths, dancing dirty, flirting with each other and making out.

That’s when I see him. Nico. Entering the house with Alex. Wait, how does he know Alex?

“Ember. What is Nico doing here?” I shake her arm.

She looks around before finding him, starting at us.

“He came.” She grins before realizing I was standing beside her. “I may have told him that you wanted him to come.” She trails off.

“What?!” I gulp. Oh god.

Ember, I’m so going to kill you!

“Leo!” She grabs his arm. “Let’s go talk over there.” She walks with him before turning to me and mouthing, ‘Have fun!’

I stand there alone, not knowing what to do. I’ve usually avoided all these parties before. I spot Nico, surrounded by a bunch of guys, but his eyes are staring at me.

We stare into each other’s eyes, but I’m the first to look away. I walk into the kitchen, luckily no ones in there. I stay there for what felt like half an hour, nibbling on food.

The music was blasting so loud, I didn’t even hear when Alex entered the kitchen, closing the door.

“Jenna! Happy birthday!” He smiles, walking towards me with a cup in his hand.

“Hey, Alex.” I smile.

“So.. Jenna.” He stands beside me.

“Alex.” You’re drunk.

It’s just beer, right Ember?

“Damn. You look incredibly, hot.” He places his cup on the counter and grabs my waist.

“Alex.” I try to back away, but he pulls me closer. “Alex, you’re drunk.”

“Drunk in love.” He mumbles as he starts kissing my neck.

“Alex!” I try moving.

He continues kissing me as he bins me against the wall.

I scream, but with the music so loud, no one can hear. He grabs my butt as he kisses my shoulder blades.Someone, anyone. Help me. One hand, tightly holds my hands as his other hand moves to my upper thigh.

“Alex!” I finally squirm away from him by punching his face.

He falls to ground and I stand there frozen. What now? He tries to get up, but he’s too drunk to stand up.

I ran out of the kitchen and run outside. Nobody’s in the backyard so I sit on the stairs, trying to collect all my thoughts. What do I do? Should I tell someone? Should I go back in there and beat him up? Don’t cry, don’t cry, don’t cry.

I hear footprints behind me and instantly, I think Alex got up. I turn around, but it’s not him. It’s just Nicholas. I sigh in relief.

He sits beside me on the stairs, not saying anything. We sit there, gazing at the stars. Should I tell him?

“It’s okay.” He clears his throat. “He won’t hurt you anymore.”

I look at him and he looks at me.

I don’t even notice I start crying, until Nico hugs me telling me that everything’s okay.

"How.. did you.." I try to speak in between sobs as Nico rubs my arms in a circular motion.

"I was searching for Alex and I was about to open the door when I heard you scream. So, I opened the door to find Alex on the ground and you running outside."

I finally stop crying, but we stay there, still wrapped in each other's arms.

"I'm sorry." After a while, I look at him.

"For what?" He raises an eyebrow.

"For crying and being a total mess." I lean my head against his shoulder.

"Don't apologize! I'm the one who should say sorry!"

"For what?" I ask.

"I saw Alex sneak in vodka, but I didn't say anything. I feel terrible and I feel even worse that he's my cousin."

He's your cousin?

"Don't feel sorry." I sit up.

He looks at me, his eyes full of worry and concern just like the time I fell. I smile before kissing his cheek.

"What was that for?" He smirks.

"For not being a dick on my birthday." I cross my arms.

"Just for you." He winks. "Do you want to go back inside?"

"I can't go back in there. I look like a hideous monster." I fix my dress. My mascara’s probably smudged and my hair's probably a mess. Can this night get any worse?

"I think you look beautiful..”He smiles before quickly adding, “For once."

I punch his arm before resting my head against his shoulder. He wrapped his arm around me and we continued watching the stars, together.

"Happy birthday." He whispers, softly.
