Third Person POV:

(2 days before the Choosing Day)

Eric, the youngest of the Dauntless leaders, was on the train, riding back to the Dauntless from the Fence where he was dealing with some leader assignments. He was leaning on the door, smoking his cigarette.

He was tired and let his eyes rest on the landscape when he saw someone by the rainwater collecting pool that the train was about to pass.

What..? Who..? Oh fuck.. Eric thought and his jaw dropped when he realized what he was seeing.

It was a female, about 17-18 years, dark brown long hair covering her bare breasts. She was standing in the  water, water reaching to her hips. It looked like she was bathing- she was throwing water on her face, running fingers through her wet hair, water dripping off from her bronze curvy hips.

Factionless.. Eric scoffed, but unable to stop looking.

He grabbed the handle next to the door and was hanging outside the train whistling to the young girl, yelling "Nice view!"

The girl startled, looked to the direction where the noise was coming and then drowned herself below the waterlevel.

Eric looked behind the train as long as possible to see if the girl got to the surface. She didn't.

Eric sat on the floor, lit another cigarette and enjoyed it. Train continued it's journey towards Dauntless.

Jamie's POV:

(Choosing Day)

I woke up  in my usual corner in the Factionless. I got up and went to the hall where there's usually something to eat.

"Here you go, Jamie!" aunt Sarah's friendly face said and gave me an apple. We weren't related , I had called her that way as long as I could remember. Sarah was the one taking care of me after my parents died 6 years ago. I was 11 then.

Despite Sarah looking after me, surviving in factionless was rough. It was rough before my parents died but after that I had to be extra careful. I often hide my long hair under my beanie hat, wore baggy clothes and smeared some dirt on my chin to hide my feminine features. It was easier this way. No harassment or odd stares.

I ate the apple, checked my knife in my boot, adjusted the locket necklace that mother had given me on my 10th birthday. I was ready. I gave Sarah a hug and left.

I knew I wont be coming back. Despite my parents fate ending up as factionless, I had the right to choose my own faction. I've always wanted to be Dauntless. I've always been a reckless kid, always fighting with the boys and rebelling against everything. I was fit, always climbing in places, running around in the streets. Father gave me the knife I had in my boot, taught me to use it. It was his legacy.

I marched towards the choosing ceremony. There were lots of young people that were already 18 or was about to turn 18 in that year. All of them sitting in their birth faction. I had no faction to sit amongst, no faction to disappoint, no parents crying or smiling to me. I just stood there on the side and waited for my turn. I could feel people staring at me. These were my final minutes as factionless.

The burning goal sizzled when my blood dripped on it.

"Dauntless" announced a voice on the stage near me. All the dauntless members where clapping and cheering. Before I could find a seat, all of the Dauntless stood up and began to run.
