Chapter Eight

It didn’t feel right being off school for five days and I was bored because I didn’t have anything to do- I’d handed in all of my assignments and coursewok so I spent the rest of the week and weekend recovering as Mum and Dad fussed over me.  I tried to help with washing up and the hoovering but I always got the same answer.

“I’ll do that you go and sit down.”

When it came to Monday morning I had a bit of a cough and sore throat but it was nothing compared to how I was feeling on Wednesday, Mum wasn’t too keen on me going back to school because apparently I still looked ‘a bit peaky’ but I was determined to not miss another day off school. The two next years are very, very important. I can’t miss any lessons if I want to get the best grades. I was in a world of my own walking to the bus stop

“Come on love I haven’t got all day!” a weak voice shouted I looked up and like normal Ellie was leaning against the wooden bus shelter, after what felt like a marathon I finally got to stand beside her

“Urgh I feel like I’ve got a hangover that’s lasted five days,” she groaned I attempted to laugh but it ended in a coughing fit.

“We sound like two old ladies now off into town to collect our pension,” I croaked.

She just looked at me and smiled “What?” I gave her a questioning look she just squealed and pulled me into a crushing hug and didn’t let go “What’s this in order of?”

“Last night I realised how lucky we are. We’ve been friends our whole lives and haven’t had a single bust up and it’s nearly been a year since Lizzy died I’m just so grateful we’re still together,” she released me.

“And we’re going be together for the rest of our lives even if we move away from each other I’ll always be here for you,” the bus turned up and we got on like normal.

As we approached the school I scanned the area and visions of Tuesday came flooding back, the feeling of Charlottes rib cracking under my hands, the smell of gas and the sound of blurred sirens.

“You okay?” Ellie’s voice brought me back to reality

“Huh oh yeah sorry I was just…thinking.”

“…well we’ve got an assembly instead of registration first the headmaster is going to shed some light on why there was a gas leak.”

The whole school was in the main hall, teachers were scattered around the perimeter to control the crowd of students. Year seven all the way up to year eleven were seated while years twelve and thirteen were gathered at the back standing. Ellie had made her way over to the other side of the hall to see how the rest of the people in our registration group were feeling and couldn’t get through the crowd so decided to stay there. A loud humming of voices hummed throughout the hall but it soon went silent when Mr Rush walked on stage.

“Good morning everyone, this is a one off meeting and registration will return to normal this afternoon. I’m sure you are all aware of the event that happened on Tuesday in Science lab three and I apologise sincerely to you all especially the class that was in that room at the time. A report was handed to us at the end of last week stating that the cause of the leak was due to a faulty tap which means that the situation was an accident and unavoidable,” I thought to myself ‘what a load of crap the taps obviously weren’t checked often enough so nobody knew if they were faulty or not’ he was winding me up and always had done since he became the head teacher four year ago, I was subconsciously looking around the room trying to drown out his voice. Some of the teachers looked interested and some of them looked like they wanted to kill themselves but one teacher stood out from the crowd.
