Chapter 9

Ryoko

An overwhelming sense of disgust threatened to consume Ryoko as she stepped out of the tent. She felt no different despite the sacrifice she'd made, and the gravity of her miscalculation sent her heart into a spiral. She was supposed to be able to feel the change. Instead, she felt empty.

It wasn't supposed to be like this, Ryoko thought as she cursed her own incompetence. Now, the misunderstanding had escalated, and she lacked any way to explain herself. She doubted that Aria would listen anyway. Would she be any different if she were in Aria's shoes?

The betrayed look in Aria's eyes ate away at Ryoko as she followed the sunken footprints in the sand. One set of prints led toward the beach, and a fresher set headed back to the hotel. The beautiful succubus was running. Ryoko was too weak to match the lengthy stride.

Panic began to creep into Ryoko's heart as she attempted to fly but found she could not. After the battle to modify her verbal contract with Tera, Ryoko had felt strength fill every fiber of her essence. That same strength felt sapped from her now, and she wondered what other magical abilities the mortal possessed.

She knew it didn't matter. None of it mattered if she ruined what she and Aria had and the promise they had made for the future. She needed to find her. She needed to explain, even if that meant resorting to crude gestures. Ryoko took a deep breath and forced herself to move faster.

As she crested the sandy ridge, the path gave way to solid concrete and the footprints faded. Only puddles reflecting her vibrant moon greeted her – well, that and the soft chorus of frogs and crickets. Ryoko desperately searched the area as she cracked her knuckles absently. Where are you, my Queen?

"No one asked you to follow me."

Ryoko had just passed through the shadow of apartments where the witches lived when Aria's bittersweet voice stopped her. Buried deep in the shadows, pink orbs studied her. Conflicting emotions rushed through her as Aria stepped into the moonlight: fear, guilt, remorse, shame. More than anything, the fear that she had irreparably broken something.

The glow of the night sky draped the succubus in a pale radiance. Somehow, the horns protruding from her crown of purple curls looked longer, sharper. Aria turned at the last second and for a blissful moment, her tail licked at the exposed skin of Ryoko's lower back. Ryoko wanted to reach out for her, but the guilt in her heart kept her glued in place.

"Are you coming or not?"

"Yes..."

Aria froze. Before Ryoko could react, she felt Aria's thin succubus tail wrap around her waist. She was jerked forward as Aria pivoted, their bodies brought closer. Ryoko could feel Aria's luminescent pink pupils burning holes into her. Even in the shadows decorating the world around them, she looked beautiful.

"Say again?"

No words came, as hard as Ryoko compelled them to. Why only one word? Only one stupid fucking word. She tried again, but only a coarse sound left her lips. Nothing intelligible.

Aria's eyes left Ryoko as she peered over Ryoko's shoulder. The aggravating bickering of the witches filled the night air and it seemed they had almost caught up. Ryoko longed to have those mesmerizing pink pupils stare into her longer.

Instead, Aria grabbed her wrist and pulled.

To Ryoko's delight, they were running. Her heart raced with every step. The words no longer mattered, only the loose grip on her hand and the fragrance filling the air as Aria took the lead.
