Dinner. That's when you would tell the team. They'd all be sitting there- It would be nice and casual- you could explain it, calmly. Ok. 

You picked your seat across the table from Keith and next to Pidge. Conversations were going normally- then there was Lance.

"Did you know that koalas can give you Chlamydia?"

Shiro chocked on his food. "Lance?!"

Lance shrugged. He elbowed Hunk. "Look it up, man."

Hunk read off a tablet. "Yep- Koalas can give you Chlamydia."

"What are koalas?" Allura asked.

"What is Chlamydia?" Coran asked.

"Ok- point is-" Shiro started.

You clear your throat. "Actually- I think we could have a bit of a different conversation-"

"Please." Shiro begged. Lance and Hunk stopped elbowing each other and laughing about Sexually Transmitted Diseases.

"I wanted to talk about gender for a hot minute." You said, shifting in your chair the slightest bit. "I'm fine with female pronouns but I'm not really... female. I mean- I was born as a girl but I think that it's important to know that I'm non-binary."

Keith frowned. "What the hell is that supposed to mean?"

You sighed. "It means that I'm not really a girl or a guy- I'm just... neither."

He rolled his eyes. "If you're not one or the other- your not even a person."  He laughed.

"Woah-" Lance started, eyes wide. "Dude she's still a person- she's like a koala, she-"

"No! She's not a koala, Lance!" Pidge said, trying to interrupt his train of thought.

"If she's not a guy or a girl- who have I been hanging out with?!" Keith shouted.

You took a deep breath. "I'm excusing myself from the table. Good night everyone." You said, standing up.

"Wait!" Pidge started, but you had already left.

Shiro looked pissed. "Nice going, Keith. Never knew that you were such an ass."

Keith looked guilty. "C'mon. What she said makes literally no sense."

"No." Lance said, shaking his head. "If you don't understand it- that's on you."

"Genderqueer doesn't mean that she's not a human. She is. She was born a girl but that doesn't mean that she has to identify as one- "

Hunk shook his head. "You didn't even treat her like she was worth being alive."

Allura put down her fork. "I thought you liked her. I really did."

"What? No!" Keith stammered. "Yes- I don like her but I don't like guys and-"

"She is non-binary! There's a different. Do you love a gender or the person attached to its label?" Pidge asked.

Keith pushed his food away. "Man I fucked this up."

Shiro sat back and crossed his arms "Go fix it."
