It's funny how quickly things can happen and what an impact it can make. You've seen it happen in history countless time. It can either change things for the better or it can destroy the world. I remember when the Great War had started. I was only about six years old. The world was at war with itself. There were no allies, just enemies. Countries turned on other countries and states turned on other states. There were chemical weapons and nuclear bombs that wiped out half of the world's population. What started all of this? Greed. Hunger. Want for power. It consumes even the most pure hearted. You turn into someone else. There are no more nations, continents, countries, or states. The remaining living people live scattered around on what's left of Earth.
I am one of those few people who are still alive. I'm Jess and I live in the Forest Sector. It's located in what once was Michigan. We live in one of the very rare sectors surrounded in dense woods. There aren't many trees or plants left in the world. Most were burned or destroyed. We were very lucky not to get bombed. But we live in the middle of nowhere so nobody ever thought to. When the Great War was over, the remaining people in the world set up Sector's. They are like cities but surrounded by large walls and gates to protect us from the outside.
There are countless vicious creatures and savages that live in the forest. Some of the chemicals changed the animals. There are vicious mutant animals that live in there. You can hear them howling and screaming at night. But the creatures aren't what you have to really worry about. The chemicals didn't just effect animals. They effected humans too.
There are four different types of people living in the world. The first are the normal humans. That's me. We live in the sectors protected from the things living on the outside. We have our own small farms and shops. It's hard to make money and half of the people in the Forest Sector are starving. We are controlled by the Gissen family. They are the ones that built the Forest Sector and have been controlling it ever since. But I'll explain all that later.
The second type of people are the Dead Eyes. They are basically what I used to imagine what Zombies were like when I was younger. A certain chemical leaked out and turned people into... Well, zombies. They are basically dead but they slowly walk around and stare into the sky. They aren't that dangerous... I don't think. When I was younger, I got a glimpse of one through the gate. It scared the crap out of me. The eyes... They were just pitch black. No life in them at all. That's why they are called Dead Eyes.
The third type of people are the Savages. These are the dangerous ones. They are like regular people but with dark, sick, twisted minds and sharp teeth. They live out somewhere in the forest. They eat whatever they can find. Sometimes, even their own kind... They are extremely violent and have occasionally tried to get pass the cities walls. I have nightmares about them all the time.
The fourth and final type of people are the Rouges. They are normal people but they don't want to live in a Sector. They live out on their own. Rely on their resources. It's a very hard life and extremely dangerous considering that the creatures and Savages could attack at anytime. But some people like to be on their own, and sometimes people aren't given a choice. In sectors, if someone does a horrible crime, we exile them. We give them a few basic supplies, but other than that they are own their own.
Back to my sector. The Forest Sector. We are located in the middle of a forest filled with mutated creatures, Savages, and Dead Eyes. Our sector is about the size of two Disneyland's. I live in house 26B. There are about 500 people in all that live here. Most of us barely have enough money to buy food while the Gissen family have all the luxury goods. They have their own farm and all the food is sent directly to them. Us on the other hand are struggling to make it by. There are very few jobs to have and most of them are terrible and barely pay you at all. You can work on the small farms, in the small shops, sweep the streets, become an Officer or a Patroler. An officer is basically like a policeman. They walk around the city to make sure nobody causes trouble. A Patroler is someone who stands at different posts on the top of the Wall to watch out for any attacks. It rarely happens though.
I live with my older brother Andrew, my mom, and my grandma. My dad was forced by the government to fight in the War and we haven't seen him since. It's been nine years since the Great War started but two years since it ended.
I have long, wavy, light brown hair and pale light skin. Everyone always complements me on my crystal blue eyes. I'm pretty average height for a fifteen year old. I love to explore the city. I want to explore the forest one day, but when is that ever really going to happen? I'm always getting into trouble with the Officers. I always stay out and walk around at night when I'm not suppose to. My brother Andrew is four years older than me and is very tall and brawn. We works in the back of the bakery where he moves the heavy packs of flour around. He's always there for me, especially when I get in trouble. Andrew has the same light brown hair as me only his is a lot shorter. It looks like Shaggy's hair from Scooby Doo.
I'm not very close with my mom. She's kinda... Out of it. Ever since my dad went away she's been waiting for him to come back. But it's been nine years now... Sometimes you have to let it go but she just doesn't understand that. She spends most of her day sitting around staring into space.
Nanna is the sweetest thing. She knows exactly how to make me smile. Nanna is my mom's mom and she's been with us ever since Grandpa died ten years ago. Nanna is usually the one that cooks the meals and does the chores while mom just sits around dazed out. I help as best I can. Nanna is the best cook around and my friends are always coming over for dinner.
Jason is my best friend. We both love to sneak out at night, we have the same sense of humor, and we like the same food. Jason's natural hair color is a dirty blond but he dyes it a dark blue with his own strange concoction. He has jade green eyes that are always looking for trouble, and has a long scar on the left side of his face from when he cut it on a piece of glass.
Marcy is always the one who tries to keep us in line. She's not very outgoing but she sometimes gives in and we end up having her doing some crazy stuff. She has short black hair with pale skin and hazel eyes which are hidden behind a large pair of glasses.
Fox is the really sneaky one. His real name is Keith but we never call him that. We call him Fox for his red hair and his sticky fingers. He is always stealing food and other items and never gets caught. It's amazing! Once me and Jason stood back and just watched him steal an Officers keys. Fox was originally from England but moved to the US when he was five.
Jason, Marcy, and Fox are my closest friends.
Life inside the Forest Sector is so boring and dull. Every night I dream about going on the other side to see what it's like.
"You aren't thinking of running away are you?" a familiar voice called from behind me. I turned to see Jason's blue head sticking out my window. He climbed onto the roof and joined me while I looked out onto the city. It was dead. No light or people except for patrolling officers. There was a curfew of 10:00PM every night. It sucked.
"How'd you guess?" I replied.
"I know that look on your face you have," he said pointing at me. "It says. Poor me. I'm trapped inside the city's walls while my heart yearns for adventure!" he said in a mocking voice. I punched him in the arm and he almost fell over. "Whoa! Only joking! You know I feel the same way too!"
"It's just so boring here! You know I would do it, if it weren't for Andrew and Nanna. I'd go and become a rogue and you would probably come with me!"
Jason just patted my head, "Well that's not gonna happen then now is it. Even if Andrew and Nanna weren't there you wouldn't go. Think of all the mutants and Savages."
"You know I'm not afraid."
"Ya, and that's what worries me. Your fearlessness could get you killed."
I just smiled and shook my head. "Hey Nanna made some peach cobbler. The peaches are fresh from our tree in the back. Would you like some?"
"I have my fork in my pocket ready to go." he smiled.
