I tilted my head and furrowed my brow slightly. "Did you have a nightmare, too?"
He blushed lightly and hesitantly shook his head again. "Not exactly..."
"Then please let me in! I really, really don't want to be alone right now..." I lowered the blanket from my mouth, allowing my desperation to be fully evident in my voice and eyes. "Please...?"
Ja'far looked into my eyes and instantly held an expression of sympathy. He thought about his options for a little longer, all the while staring into my big __e/c__ eyes, then stepped aside, allowing me entrance into his room. "Alright, you can stay."
I smiled gratefully and, rather than walking inside, I dropped the blanket and leapt straight into Ja'far's arms, holding him tight in a hug as I buried my face into his chest. "Thank you!"
He was incredibly tense in my arms and carefully separated from the embrace. "That's alright," he mumbled, quickly closing the door and shuffling over to the bed where he sat down and stared at his hands in his lap.
Confused and a little concerned by his strange behaviour, I picked up the blanket and walked over to sit next to him. "Are you sure you didn't have a nightmare?"
"It wasn't a nightmare, it was just... shameful," Ja'far still refused to look directly at me as he spoke. He even moved over a bit after I sat down to put some space between us.
I frowned at that response. I've never heard of a dream being shameful before, so I wasn't sure what that actually meant. "Shameful...? How was it shameful?"
Again, Ja'far blushed, only this time it was noticeably darker. He fidgeted with his hands as he said, "I'd rather not go into any detail... but if it will help ease your curiosity, it had something to do with you," honestly, hearing that just made me even more curious, but before I could ask any more questions he spoke again, "It's late. You should try and get some sleep."
I nodded and moved to the other side of the bed, lying down and covering myself with the blanket I brought. "What about you? You need more sleep, too."
"I'm not tired right now," was his simple reply.
"Well... can you at least lie down with me?" I asked softly.
Ja'far looked back at me and examined my features. I was much calmer than before, but I was still begging with my eyes not to be left alone. He sighed inwardly and awkwardly laid down as far away from me as possible. I still had no idea why he was being so distant from me, literally and figuratively, but I just blamed it on the dream he said he had.
"... You said you had a nightmare? If you don't mind my asking, what was it about?" His voice came out quiet and cautious, like he wasn't sure if he should actually ask.
I thought about it for a moment, wondering how exactly to put it into words. "Well... it was like there was a war going on. There were all these weapons, spells being cast... blood... Everybody was getting hurt, but the thing that scared me the most was the fact that... I lost you," tears steadily welled up in my eyes as I recalled all the painful details of my nightmare. Somehow voicing it had made it seem a lot more real, and even though Ja'far was right in front of me, the thought of losing him still scared me. The tears soon started to roll down my face. I quickly wiped them away, only to have them replaced by new ones. "Please don't leave me, Ja'far..." I said, my voice barely above a whisper.
Ja'far looked at me sympathetically and moved closer, then reached up to my face and used his thumb to wipe away some of my tears. "I could never leave you. My heart wouldn't allow it."
I sniffled and closed the gap between us as I once again buried my face into his chest and held onto his shirt tightly, allowing my tears to fall freely and stain his clothing. He didn't seem to mind though and let me cry my little heart out as he stroked my hair with one hand and rubbed soothing circles on my back with the other in an attempt to comfort me, occasionally saying things like "it's okay" and "just breathe".
After I had let everything out in the form of an emotional release, I felt the strong urge to close my eyes and fall asleep, but I didn't want to be rude by leaving Ja'far awake on his own. I yawned quietly and struggled to keep my eyes open. The warmth and feeling of security Ja'far was providing me only made me feel more sleepy, though. He laughed lightly and said, "Go to sleep, __y/n__. You're tired."
"But-"
"It's okay. I'll make sure you don't have any more nightmares, and I'll be here when you wake up,"
"... Are you sure you don't mind?" I asked, to which Ja'far nodded with a warm smile. "Okay... Goodnight. And thank you," I closed my eyes and nuzzled as close to Ja'far as possible, still holding his shirt tightly in my fingers.
Ja'far held me close and continued to rub my back to help me fall asleep, silently assuring me that he wouldn't let go anytime soon. The grip I had on him eventually started to loosen and my breathing steadied as sleep began taking over my body.
"Sweet dreams, __y/n__."
