Chapter 3: The Joker

Batman followed the young boy, whose name he had learned was Steven, all the way past minimum security, medical division, to maximum security psych ward. There were only three patients in there at the moment. Harvey Dent, better known in the criminal world as Two-Face, the infamous Harleen Quinzel, and last but not least, the Joker himself. Batman's greatest enemy.
Three bolts a guard slid back, she unlocked two padlocks, and typed in at lightning speed a four-digit passcode to a small pad on the wall. Finally, Batman was in. He looked around at the tiny room he was stood in, taking in the padded walls all around, the small interview table which had been prepared for his visit with two chairs, the metal bed and thin blanket on the other wall, and finally his eyes came to rest on the broken and battered figure of his adversary curled up in the corner. Of course, as soon as he noticed Batman was here, he jumped up and cried with a grin,
"Batsy! So, you got my message then!"
Batman looked at the man in front of him, almost happy to see him again. But then he looked properly, and saw a battered, bruised, but ultimately crushed shell of a man. His heart wrenched at the sight, but he did his best to maintain a Batman-like composure, emotionless and powerful.
"Sit down." he managed, waving away the guard and motioning for her to shut the door. She obliged, and he turned back to the Joker. He couldn't help himself but ask.
"What have they done to you?"
"What do you mean?" replied the Joker, giggling. "I'm fine, darling. Now, let's talk about why you're really here, instead of you pretending to care about me."
"But see, you don't understand, Joker." the crusader replied. "Strangely, I do."
"What? I'm sorry, I must be having ear trouble. I thought you said you do care?" said the Joker, voice dripping with sarcasm. Batman seemed to regain composure then.
"Nothing. Now, what's this about you escaping, hmm?"
