The day went by faster than I had thought. Ann put me into action again on Alex's orders. Alex, short for Alexis (which I didn't understand, considering Alexis is already a short name as it is), would not go near me or give me any directions herself. Apparently she was still much too annoyed with me and, as Cyn said, "would kick my ass and have me out in the street" the second I tried to speak to her, so I kept my distance.

But, I could still keep my eye on her from a distance. Watching Alexis was like watching an army commander give orders and keep everyone in line. She would tell Ann to do one thing, Cyn to do another, and Darby to finish up. She was on top of everything and everyone. The kitchen? Check. The bar? Check. The entrance? Check.

Even the customers seemed to admire and respect her. If they got too rowdy, one glare from her would have angry sailors suddenly behaving like polite schoolboys.

She would occasionally glance in my direction and catch me staring at her. I must've looked like a total creep, being too panicked to even have the decency to avert my gaze. I didn't need to, however, because she would only peer at me for a few seconds, expression unchanging, before returning to business.

The bar was surprisingly calm and, dare I say it, cute during the daytime. Breakfast was served as if the place was a temporary café, and the waitresses even dressed differently to reflect the changed atmosphere. However, that didn't mean their attitudes changed. Cyn still had on what I came to realize was her usual face. I liked to call it 'bitch-face' as her expression seemed to default to 'bitch'. Darby, however, still had that bubbly and clueless persona. She was like a walking Barbie doll, except she was short and had pitiful breasts.

When I finally was given a break from washing dishes, Darby sidled up next to me and leaned over. I recognized the look she was giving me. She was ready to do that girl thing. Gossip, was it? My friends at my old school always used to do that but it took them only a few days to realize I wasn't much into the whole sharing-likely-false-rumors-about-people thing.

Darby's light blue eyes were bright, just like her sunny personality. It made me a bit nauseous but Darby was definitely more tolerable than Cyn and so I offered her a smile in response. This seemed to give her the green light to gossip, because it began to spill out of her mouth almost instantly.

"So I hear you were caught sleeping on the boss's desk this morning," she whispered, looking over her shoulder as if we were sharing top-secret government information.

I hadn't expected the gossip to be about me, let alone it to be true. I let out a nervous laugh and rubbed at the back of my neck. "Yeah... I hadn't expected anyone to be here so early. I thought this was a bar."

She laughed and even her laughter was rainbow bright. More nausea. The girl was so white her entire body turned red with just a few joyous chuckles and when she was finished she leaned in again and whispered, "She's been grumpy all day today."

I huffed. Not surprising. "Well her new employee did just take a nap on her desk." As a boss, I couldn't imagine a bigger insult.

Darby nodded enthusiastically, eyeing me like some kind of brave risk-taker when really I was just, for lack of a better word, a hobo. I decided I liked being brave though, so I straightened a bit and tried to look like the badass Darby was imagining in her head.

"So..." I knew she was about to ask the question everyone was probably wondering. "What were you doing sleeping on the boss's desk?"

I didn't know what to say so I just laughed. Even Darby seemed a bit put off by my laugh and she let out a few nervous chuckles herself. Her eyes kept on me though, making sure I didn't forget she had asked me a question.
