Welcome to my chaotic life. I'm a 20-year-old woman. I was always smiling; I had the world in my hands. But to understand my misery, I need to take you back to the time when I had everything at my fingertips, only to have it all ripped away from me.

Years ago: Inez's 5th Birthday Party

Irene POV:

Irene: "HAPPY BIRTHDAY, Inez! My beautiful princess, are you enjoying your birthday party, my love?"

Inez: "Thank you, Mommy, and yes, I am, but Mommy, where is Daddy? I haven't seen him today. He promised me he would be here at my party with pizza."

Probably out gambling again. I quickly shake the thought of it away, feeling the anger boiling up at just the idea of it.

Irene: "I don't know, honey, but he should be here so-."

Just as I was about to finish my sentence, Erick walked through the door, acting as if he weren't four hours late to his own daughter's birthday party. He stood tall at 6'2", with a head full of healthy, long locs and golden-flecked irises. He finally locked eyes with me, then glanced back at Inez. I watched her face and eyes light up with so much excitement and joy that it melted my heart as she ran into her father's arms.

Inez:
"DDDAAAADDDYYYY"

Eric: "Hi, my special little princess, how is my special birthday girl doing?"

Inez: "I am better now, Daddy, but Daddy, where is my pizza? I don't see it.

Eric: "Oh, uh, I'm sorry, bugger, I forgot to pick it, but how old is my little grizzly bear now?"

Inez: "Aww, man, it's okay, Daddy, ha ha. I am 5, Daddy, duh. Today's my birthday, remember?"

She pulls him toward me as they approach. His clothes look rumpled, as if he had just had a quick encounter. Disgust and anger rise to the surface, my face twisting before I can hide it. Now we stand face-to-face.

Irene: "Finally, Eric, it's nice of you to join us."

Eric: "No, need for you to be sarcastic. We need to talk." He looked so serious.

I looked down at Inez, who clung to Eric's hip.

Irene: "Go enjoy your party with your friends, honey. Daddy and I have to go talk, but we will join you soon, okay, baby."

Inez:" Okay, Mommy, see ya later, chicken butt." I shake my head, giggling. Slowly, I turn back to Eric. I can feel this urge just to stab him, but I refrain from doing anything stupid. I can't go to jail over this silly motherfucker.

Eric: "Are you just going to keep standing there like a deer in headlights, or are you gonna come on?"

Prison is starting to look like it's for me. I sighed and said nothing as I followed him upstairs to our bedroom balcony, which overlooks our beautiful 10-foot garden. Filled with orchids, lilies, roses, and numerous other flowers blooming beautifully, the air was filled with an earthy, sweet scent. Inhale a deep breath, taking in the smell of the flowers. I forgot Eric was even there until he made himself known.

Eric:" We need to talk. I need you to listen to me honestly. I need to tell you something. You should hear it from me before anyone else.

Irene:" What is it? Are you gonna tell me why you were 4 hours late to OUR DAUGHTER'S birthday party?!"

Eric:" I am gay. The reason I was late was that I lost track of time with my boyfriend. I am leaving you. I want a divorce. I don't want to hide who I am anymore. Inez isn't my biological kid, and my man doesn't like kids, so I really don't want her either. Als-. "

Irene:" BOYFRIEND?! What the fuck? So, you're out getting fucked in your ass, being someone's little pocket bitch instead of being here for your fuckin daughter. Gambling is one thing, but A FUCKING BOYFRIEND, the same motherfucker that made me cut off my gay best friend because you didn't like the way he dressed. WOW!"
