Everytime I close my eyes, I am reminded of the chilling darkness of the time I had brushed with death. If it weren't for the creature who saved me, I would've disappeared into the deep blue of the ocean.
The water was utterly icy and dark, chilling to the bone.
My body was slowly losing its warmth, and losing it's breath.
Even against my will, I clawed up, towards the dim light shrinking in the distance.
My hands were numb, my eyes blurry and struggling to stay open.
Water poured into my lungs, replacing the little breath I had left in me.
The saltiness in my mouth left a bitter feeling in my heart.
My eyes could barely stare at the light anymore.
I knew that if my eyes closed, they wouldn't open again.
I reached out once more, to no avail.
No one would save me.
Because I chose this.
This was what I wanted, wasn't it?
But even so...
I couldn't stop the regret from creeping into my mind...
After three weeks, an IV drip and a checkup, I was free to head home. Even ten years later, I couldn't forget the story that was told to me that day. The creature that had saved me left a blurred image in my memory. I knew what I'd wanted to do after that. It gave me a whole new meaning of life, devoting myself to researching marine animals and protecting them. Now, I'm going to save the creature that protected me before, from the pollution that humans have caused.
"-Sam! Samantha! Can you hear me?" A co-worker of mine screamed in my ear, nearly rupturing my eardrums. He had the most high pitched voice I've ever heard. He was good at singing, but his voice sure could be annoying when he wanted it to be.
"Calm down Daniel. What's the situation that you have to go and rupture my eardrums for?" I asked, half sarcastically as I looked to him. Daniel, in turn, sighed as he opened the van door.
"We're here. I'd just thought you'd be the first to jump out." He replied, looking quite exhausted. My eyes lighted up as I felt the tiredness I had from this morning fade away. Nearly jumping from my seat, I headed out. My expression soon turned to one of shock and disgust as my eyes took sight of the trash and plastic in the ocean. Taking notice of a cluster of people, I made my way to the middle, feeling the most angry I've ever felt. That was when I saw the creature, soiled with pieces of plastic on it's body. Taking large steps, I came in front of it and kneeled, placing a gentle hand onto its fin. My emotions overflowed. It weakly looked up to me as I placed my head close to it's own.
"I'm sorry it took this long... But this time, we'll save you." My whisper was perhaps heard, but we would never know.
