The bitter wind whipped through my hair, numbing my tearstained cheeks. I huddled down further into my fleece lined jacket, trying to ignore the cold, dark night around me. I walked quickly down the sidewalk, passing the shops that have already closed for the night. The street lights that were stationed at every corner cast an eerie glow in the black and the streets were silent. The only thing I could hear was my own harsh breathing and fast beating heart. It was my own fault I was in this mess. It was my own fault Kalie was dead, brutally murdered by one of my uncle's lackeys. Lackeys? Isn't that what you call thugs, men who work for my uncle, the crime boss of a mafia family? Which I just happen to be apart of without any knowledge? How did this happen, you ask? I'll tell you how it happened.
My name is Lilly Thomas. I was the love child of a foreign college student, who was visiting Seoul to broaden her horizons, and one of the three sons to an infamous Korean Mafia family. My parents tried their hardest to hide me from the harsh realities of the crime world, but unfortunately secrets always come to the light eventually. My parents were murdered by my uncle Ciro, who had just ascended the head of the family, when I was three years old. Even though my father betrayed uncle Ciro, I was still his blood, so he raised me like his daughter, alongside his son, Jinyung. My cousin was my rock growing up. He always shielded me from the underworld my family was involved in. Actually, I didn't even know anything about the Mafia side until I ran away a few days ago.
My uncle had raised me very strictly, never allowing me to experience the outside world. I was sent to private schools and boarding schools for as long as I could remember. And the few times I was allowed to visit home, I wasn't allowed off the premises. It was a very lonely and secluded life. And that brings me to the reason I ran away. Other than Jinyung, I had one other person that I knew loved me. My best friend Kalie. She was a foreign exchange student, who was accompanying me home for the holidays. We were both nerds, loved computers, and both longed for adventures of our own. We were two peas in a pod...but that all changed in the blink of eye.
Flashback----
As Kalie and I walked up the stone pathway to the house, I noticed several dark tinted suvs parked in our driveway. It looked like someone had smeared red paint on one of the doors. Yuck! That's gonna be hard to get off if it dries. After a few more steps my foot slipped out of my shoe and I stumbled. Darn! Kalie turned around.
"Are you okay," she asked me, holding a hand to help me up.
"Yeah," I mumbled," Go on in while I put my shoe back on and I'll be right there."
She laughed at my grumpiness and opened the door quickly and walked in, shutting it loudly. As I put my shoe back on and tied it tighter this time, I heard a soft pop! pop! pop! and a scream. Kalie... I rushed to the door and pushed it open to reveal the large entryway splattered with blood. There were five bodies laying around the floor with pools of blood under and around them. Each one had bullet holes in their foreheads.
After staring at the bodies for a few seconds in shock, I looked up in horror as a man backhand Kalie to the ground. The man's name was Ted and he had always been super friendly to me in the past, even joking with me on occasion. Ted lifted Kalie off the ground by her shirt collar and threw her further away. Her small frame hit the floor and she groaned in pain. All of this happened in a matter of seconds and before I could even scream, Ted lifted his gun and shot Kalie right in front of me. Her head fell back to floor and to the side, her dead eyes staring lifelessly into mine. My eyes widened in terror, and a thin scream erupted from my throat. I fell to my knees as my eyes squeezed shut, trying to forget what I had just witnessed. I grabbed my head and continued to scream.
