Chapter twenty six

Start from the beginning

"Hey, we will be fine" Everly whispered, squishing Jeremiah's hand comfortingly. "GCPD has snipers on the roof, remember?
All we need to do is get close enough to him"

Jeremiah simply just nodded as they both started to walk past the crowd of people. Everyone's eyes were on them, but nobody could blame the citizens of Gotham for being curious as to who this mystical twin brother
of the best-known psychopath in town were.

"Hi brother" Jerome drawled out creepily
as they got close to him.

Any time about now the snipers would shot.

And, right enough, the sound of gun
shots started to ring in her ear. But, to
her and everyone's surprise, as they looked
up at the stage, Jerome hadn't been touched.
Quickly, Everly's eyes darted up to the
top of the building seeing all vantage
points had been taken over by Jerome's followers. The snipers had been killed.

They were fucked.

"I had my guys take up all the best vantage points last night so they've been watching
your little SWAT team all day" Jerome announced with a mixture of amusement
and proudness.

"Now Bruce, brother and Everly dear, get
up on stage. It's time to get this party really started up" He continued with a vicious smirk.

This was exactly what Everly was afraid
of. The plan didn't go as expected and unfortunately, it wasn't really much
of a surprise. No plan of the GCPD
seemed to ever go expected.

Now, her life was at stake but much more importantly, Bruce and Jeremiah's were too.

She looked over her shoulder to see Gordon further down the crowd with an "I screwed up" kind of face, and rightfully so. But, they had reached the point of no return, they were
to close to Jerome to not try to deactivate
his remote. It could save the life of the
hostages and Everly never passed
up a chance to help somebody.

Bruce must have thought the same thing because he had already started to move.
She gave Jeremiah a simple look and he understood that this was something she had
to do, and, he wouldn't let her do it alone.

In what seemed like a second later, they
were up on the stage. Bruce got grabbed by
two of Jerome's followers and forcefully
sat in a chair before he got tied up.

Two others approached Jeremiah and
Everly at a quick speed. One of them took
a strong hold around her trying to yank her
away from Jeremiah who still had his hand intertwined in hers. He refused to let go of
her, holding onto her hand as hard as he
could. In fact, the other follower had to take
a hold on Jeremiah too. Now, they both were being yanked in different directions.

Eventually, after a lot of struggle, the followers managed to get their hands apart. And, as Jeremiah was tied to a chair just as Bruce, Everly was lead to the side of the stage.

She knew his intentions by putting her by
the sidelines. He wanted her to watch
Jeremiah sitting there defenseless, with
her having no chance to help him.

"Ah, young love, isn't it beautiful?" Jerome spoke into the microphone mockingly. "Anyhow...where was I? Right!"

He sat himself in the seat between Jeremiah and Bruce and as Everly looked at the two twins sitting right beside each other, she couldn't help but to see a little bit of
Jeremiah in him.

"No parent will ever admit it but everyone's
got their favorites, right brother," Jerome
asked bitterly. "The one that cleans their
room, does their homework, doesn't try to
kill everyone. Little mr.perfect here, yeah, he was that guy. He got adopted by rich folks,
went to the top schools, and a top college. Meanwhile, I got dragged through the circus
by my depressed alcoholic mother forced
to clean elephant dung every day, do you
know how big those are folks?"

As she said before, his story was tragic,
but, sadly, it didn't justify anything. All the murders, all the pain he caused people.

"But, I know something that mommy and daddy never knew," Jerome said smoothly
as he got up, that vicious smirk ones again returning to his lips. "You're as crazy as I am"

Everly's eyebrows furrowed at that statement. Jeremiah had a ton lot of problems she could agree at that, but crazy wasn't one of them.

Jeremiah looked up at his brother with what looked like rage dancing in his eyes. But,
then as if he got reminded of something, his eyes traveled over to Everly and his anger
softened. That was until Jerome kept going.

"It's in your DNA, see we got the same
blood running through us. we are practically identical, you are a killer, it's your
nature, stop trying to fight it"

Jerome took out a pocket knife, cutting
off the rope wrapped around him. Then,
to everyone's surprise, laid it into
Jeremiah's hand.

"Jeremiah, please, don't listen to—"

But, it was too late, he had already
gotten up from the chair, charging towards
Jerome with the knife, aiming for his stomach.
Yet, Jerome was too fast for him, hitting him
right in the face as he fell onto the ground.

"That was so good" He laughed out
maniacally as he started to kick Jeremiah
over and over again. "I love you!"

"Stop, please!" Everly yelled trying to get herself out of the grip of the two holding
onto her. She needed to get to Jeremiah.

Everything afterwards happened so fast.
A gunshot could be heard, her heart
dropped to her stomach afraid that it
could be Jeremiah that had been shot.
Then, as she looked over at his brother,
he had a gun wound in his shoulder.

The followers that were holding Everly let
her go, to busy to look at Jerome to see
if he was ok. That gave her time to
run over to Jeremiah who still
was laying on the ground.

She watched as Jerome crawled away to
the end of the stage before jumping off
and running away. Gordon running
after him.

Everly sat herself onto the ground, laying Jeremiah's head on her lap as she started running her fingers up and down his hair. Trying to remain calm. "Hey, it's ok, they'll catch him"

"Ev—I didn't mean to try and kill him. I just,
I don't know, I wanted it all to be over with" Jeremiah tried to explain, probably afraid
that she would see her differently.

"Shh, I understand" She replied softly.
She couldn't imagine living in fear and isolation for so many years, she would
be just as tired too.

They sat there for about half an hour, all
alone. The whole crowd had disappeared
long before.

Hopefully, Gordon had managed to capture Jerome and was bringing him down any moment now.

"Mr. Valeska?" A voice suddenly called.

Jeremiah and Everly sat up only to be met by the face of a policeman. "Yeah that's me, why?"

"I'm obligated to tell you that Jerome
Valeska died ten minutes ago, cause of
death by falling from a high building" The
man said casually before he turned his back against them again and walked away.

Jeremiah didn't say a thing, he just stared into the empty air, a shocked look resting on his face. "I can't believe he's gone, he's really gone"

Everly felt like there weren't any words
to be spoken, so instead she embraced
the ginger-head in a warm hug that
seemed to have lasted forever.

They didn't have to be afraid anymore.
They could finally live their lives to the fullest.

Or so she thought.
