Lola's POV.
A knock breaks me out of my daze. I look up and set down my book. I wasn't really reading it anyway. I was just sitting there, waiting for my brothers to come home. Praying that they weren't found in the woods.
Scott and Dom used to search for berries and edible plants in the woods to bring food to our big family, while me and mom healed the sick people of our district. Dad would do what he could in the mines. I guess old habits just stick.
The door opens and Scott and Dom come in, cheeks red from the cold and grinning. I smile at them.
Celeste, her hair in a long blonde ponytail.
I shake my head to clear the memory.
She has a wicked grin on her face and a spear in her hand.
I can't stop it. I tremble, clench my fists.
I know I am going to die.
I know what happens next. Please...
Lying across my lap is Chase. Blood wells from the puncture wound in his heart.
I can't see, or breathe. I can't move. Arms trap me, I can't move, help me please.. Someone. I don't want to die...
"Lola! Stop. Stop it Lola. You're safe. You're safe."
I freeze, panting. Dominic has me locked in his arms, restricting me. Scott stands worridly behind him. Imideatly I start to cry. He releases me and they both sit, pulling me up into their arms.
Another stupid vission. They come and go. I've had so many now that Scott and Dom know to snap me out. Guin's only seen a few, but she knows to go get one of them. Any of them. She knows to stay away.
I hate it. I can't control them. Sometimes I can stop them. Most of the time I can't. They make my little sister afraid of me.
When the tears fade, Scott wraps a blanket around me.
"Do you need to rest?" Dom asks.
I shake my head, tears still slipping down my face.
"No. I'm sorry."
"Lola, stop. You have nothing to be sorry for," Scott says.
"Besides needing you guys to constantly babysit me. God, I'm nearly thirteen and I need a babysitter. What am I gonna do on the tour?" I ask helplessly.
The tour. Another dreaded nightmare. Nearly two weeks of parading through the districts, as if they didn't hate me enough. Is it not bad enough that I had to go through with that nightmare, that now I'm never going to get a moment alone, but now this too. Attending parties and giving eulogies for the disseased Tributes. I won't be able to face Two. Emily's loyal face. Jace who she died trying to protect.
"Don't worry. You'll constantly have Effie being strange to distract you," Dom says, unable to ever be serious.
That's just Dom. He'll take any opportunity to make somebody laugh, whereas Scott will take your emotions seriously.
And me. The mentally unstable, damaged sister. I don't know where I fit in this trio.
Mom appears at the door. She is beautiful; she looks simultaneously 22 and 38 in that fascinating way that young and old blend perfectly. In reality, she's only 34. Mom has also been healing any sick or injured people from the district for free now. What else could we possibly need?
"Your Capital escorts are coming tomorrow morning, are you packed?" She asks.
I nod. My one backpack sits at the foot of my bed. From here on out, the Capital will dress me and I will have all the things I need. I only pack personal things.
