Chapter 4.

                             ‘School.

I turned it off and rolled out of bed, tugged on my dull black and yellow uniform and raked a brush through my hair. I flopped down the ladder, and down to the kitchen. A sweet song glistened through the kitchen door.

“Rain drops on roses and whiskers on kittens, brown copper kettles and warm woolen mittens, brown paper packages tied up strings theses are a few of my favourite things…”  she led off humming the tune which I remember off The sound of Music. The toaster popped and she turned and smiled at me.

“Good morning Mattie!” she beamed. She plopped the toast on a plate and handed it towards me. “Toast?” I nodded, grabbed the chocolate spread and sat at the table. “Your dad has already set off to work, but he’s given me the address of the Blue Glassier Junior School. Now I know you’ll be setting off soon with Adam and Zach, so I won’t see you until later on.” I nodded as Cassidy beamed in the morning light. Zach arrived at the table in his new uniform; later Adam arrived stinking strongly of Lynx Apollo stuff. Zach cringed.

“How can you wear that disgusting stuff?” 8 o’clock arrived and I left the house with Adam and Zach (the normal way, not the over the wall way.) I told them the directions but went a different way myself. I met my friends at the co-op normally and that’s exactly where I went. Both of my friends went horse riding at Warren Riding Stables, with their own horses too. The first to arrive was Jamie Woodhead; she was tall and had a short cap of tawny brown hair that reached to the bottom of her ear loaves. She had blue-y green eyes and peachy cream skin. Then arrived Cameron Green; a giddy girl with curly red hair and brown eyes. We were the three amigos, the three musketeers. We’d only known each other since the start of year seven but we were still inseparable. People used to tease us because we apparently had boy names! I met Jamie first at the stables, and then we both stuck up for Cameron when she was being picked on so now we’re Bff’s!  We walked together to our dismal high school. We laughed and joked and talked about our horses. Jamie’s horse, Sandy, is a thoroughbred mare who’s grey legs were made for running and running alone. Cameron has only just got her horse but she loves him all the same, he’s called Toby, brown Hanoverian with a shaggy black mane. When we arrived at school we sat in our favourite little alcove which had trees and bushes covering the entrance. No one could see us there, or hear us for it was not some where people often go, but we could see everything. And I mean everything, everyone who walked past and everyone who walked into school. A gaggle of boys walked past; today there was an extra member. Adam. Cameron and Jamie had noticed the new guy too and they were interested.

“Ooh!” crooned Cameron she pointed to Adam “he’s cute!”

“Ew!” I giggled “He is not cute!” Cameron looked confused.

“How can you say that? I mean are you blind!” she gawped.

“That’s Adam.” I sighed “He’s my new step-brother.” Cameron looked disappointed. She frowned and shook her head “You’re right, he is NOT cute!” Jamie laughed and shook her head, exasperatedly.
