Chapter Eighteen

"Alpha" we say in unison

He rubs the back of his head "have you seen Electra? She won't answer her phone"

We both shake our head "have you tried shifting and linking her? Maybe she's on a run?" I suggest

He sighs "yeah I have, she's not answering" he leans his head on his hands "I don't know what's going on with her, she's been strange all week" he comments

Matt looked up to him "maybe she's worried about the full moon party? It's on her birthday and maybe she's freaking out about finding her mate" he suggests

Cade nods his head "if she does find him I'm going to give him a good talking to"

Matt laughs a bit "yeah if you can get them apart from each other" he laughs. Cade growls and he goes quiet.

I got over the fact they were talking about Electra finding her mate, each time they mentioned it I felt unease and I had to get away.

Electra walks in through the doors and Cade stands up "speak of the devil" he says as he walks over to her

I slightly glance at her but turn my gaze away

I had to stay away from her for the next few days and I manage to. Just barely.

The next few days dragged, my thoughts of Electra never subsided, in fact I think they got more intense and I found myself stealing glances at her every chance I got

It also had me having a lot of cold showers

She never spoke to me, maybe a slight smile every now and then but she stayed away. It killed me silently but she was better off. Tonight she will probably find her mate.

With her being the daughter of an alpha a lot of alpha and beta children would be attending this party. Mostly because wolves with powerful blood were usually mated with someone with equally powerful blood.

I watched out my window as cars arrived and tents were being set up. The full moon party would be held on our land this time.

There was still a long day ahead of setting up and getting ready. Electra had been taken to the holding room that all the new eighteen year olds are held in until just before midnight

They didn't want them finding their mate or drinking too much and clouding their judgement before the ceremony began

I spent my day in my room, before getting dressed at 10pm and joining the party

People were already getting drunk, laughing loudly and a few were just sitting by the large fire

I took my seat at the fire, just wanting to wait out the rest of the night, I didn't want to drink as a little part of me was hoping that Electra would be my mate and I didn't want anything clouding my mind

I felt someone sit next to me, I already knew who it was but her smell was slightly different "Shauna" I look over to her and smile

She smiles back at me "what's on your mind, Kyan?" She asks, curiosity evident on her face

"What did you say to Electra at the new alphas party?" I ask quietly, almost scared of the answer

She sighs "I knew there was something in the way you looked at her" she smiles

I didn't know what she was on about "what do you mean?"

She grins "you're only asking me because you can feel something, I can see it in your face"  she pats me on my shoulder "but... to answer your question" she pauses in thought "she was wondering why you are the way that you are" she leans her elbow on her knee and her jaw in her palm

I didn't really know what she meant, I am the way I am because that's just me

Shauna wasn't finished "she saw you with me and other women and was curious, she had heard rumours of your supposed infidelity"

I raised my eyebrow at her

"Oh don't worry, I didn't tell her the real story, I just said you'd tell her when you're ready" she rubs my back "she was going to come over to you before that girl did, she saw her touching you and I swear she looked murderous"

I sighed, I would have preferred if Electra came over to me

Shauna sighed "she didn't understand how I just sat there and didn't get angry, but I told her that, one, I did just find my mate and two, I knew your rules and as much as I care about you I respected your rules" she smiled

So much was going through my head, she was feeling jealousy over some girl touching me, but we weren't each other's mates and she was trying to understand me? Why? What makes her want someone like me?

I'm not good for her.

Someone comes over and sits next to Shauna, wrapping their arms around her and breaking me out of my thoughts. I notice her mate sitting next to her and shake his hand "nice to see you again" I nod

He nods back "you too" I watch the couple cuddle in front of the fire a little before Shauna turns back to me

"She has strong feelings for you, I could see it in her face when you looked at her and when she saw you with that woman she almost couldn't control herself" Shauna says "it's okay to open your heart, Kyan" she smiles at me before turning away. Her and her mate say goodbye before they walk away.

I had to think back, all the times Electra and I were together she always had a smile on her face, she always found a reason to bump into me or get close to me

That kiss we shared, I almost lost all control and had to force myself not to take it further

I had never felt that way with anyone, she brought out the best in me and when she was around I felt so carefree

She's everything I'd want in a mate

I was bought out of my thoughts when Cade starts talking on the stage we set up. Announcing all of the potential mates one by one.

I made my way toward the stage just as Electra came to the stage, she was the last to appear and I heard some crude comments from some wolves next to me

I growl at them and they shut up

Her eyes find mine and she smiles, goddess her smile is so beautiful, I never really stopped to look at her, but now I saw her as the most beautiful woman I had ever seen

It felt like my skin was on fire, each step I took closer to getting on the stage I felt my body heating up. My hairs stood on end and I felt tingles

I started to shake the new eighteen year olds hands. There were nine in total and I made my way down the line. Electra being last

Each second ticking by felt like minutes, I felt like I couldn't breathe and as I stood front of her I finally caught my breath

She looked like she was having the same intense feelings I felt

I knew this was right, it had to be, I reached out halfway and her hands slowly made there way to mine

We waited just shy of each other before she reached out and grabbed my hand

I felt... nothing

Her expression matched mine as she looked down at my hands and her face saddens

I feel my heart break, I was so sure

I ran off the stage

I heard someone call after me but my ears were ringing

I made it to the edge of the forest and shifted, ripping my clothes into pieces and ran

I just kept running, my heart constricted, my legs ached and I slumped in a bed of grass

I lay there whining and howling. I felt like I had lost a piece of me, I said I'd never open my heart up again and I knew this was the reason why

I was breaking again
