I quickly clean up my families wing, as that was my job in the pack. I then look in the mirror, making sure my hair wasn't frizzy, and looked at my dark skinny jeans and black hoodie didn't have any dust on them. When I am satisfied with how I look, I look into my green eyes. That's when it hit me.
Matthew and I have the same eyes. And the same hair, except his is curly. I grab my book bag and run down the stairs.
"Careful, Bailey. You'll get yourself hurt." My grandma warns me. I look up at her, seeing my mothers eyes in hers. She's the only one who has faith in me in this whole pack.
"Hi, grandma. I have to go, or I'll miss the bus." She chuckles and kisses my forehead.
"Love you."
"I love you too, grandma." I hurry out the door and make it just in time. I look for an empty seat, but there is none. I then notice Matthew rides this bus. That's weird, I didn't notice him after school yesterday. I go and sit next to him.
"Hey, Matthew." I greet him, looking into his eyes, my eyes technically.
"Hi Bailey!" He greets back. He holds out a pop tart.
"Oh! Thank you." I take it and eat it.
"No problem. I heard there's a science project today." He groans.
"On the second day?" He nods and I frown.
"Ew." We say at the same time. We arrive to school, and we both head to Mr.Lawson's class first thing. We go to our table and wait for the rest of the class to get here.
Mr.Lawson claps his hands together. "Okay class, today I will be assigning you your first project of the year." Matt and I groan, along with some other students. He chuckles and continues. "Don't be disappointed. It'll be on whatever you want, as long as it is appropriate and science related! You do have partners, and it's your table buddy. You'll need a poster and a slideshow, it's due in three days! There won't be any class time to work on this so work it out with your partner! Get to brainstorming."
I turn to Matt. "So, what do you want to do it on?" I ask him.
"Well I was thinking about evolution, but since your family is so religious..." he starts.
"We believe in evolution." I reassure him. "We can do it on that if you'd like."
"Really?" He asks and I nod. "Great! Your house or mine?"
"Yours. There's three families living in my house and it's noisy." I state.
"Okay, it's just me and my siblings, and my parents of course. Unless you count my dad's friend who's been staying with us ever since I was born." He shrugs.
"Oh?" I inquire.
"Yeah, he's kind of a nobody. Goes out every night. He always says he's looking for something. Or somebody, I don't know. It's confusing." I nod my head.
"So what time after school?" I ask.
"My brother Jasper can take you, if that's okay with you?"
"Yeah, it's not like anybody will notice I'm gone anyway."
🐺Later that day🐺
I walk to the lobby and meet up with Matt.
"We just have to wait for Jasper." He informs me. We stand there for a few minutes.
"What do you think you're doing?" I hear Lewis's voice demand. I look up to see him staring angrily at me.
"I'm going to Matt's house." I tell him.
"Why, so you can be a little slut like your mom?" I feel my face turn red with anger.
"No! To do our science project! And she's your mom, too you idiot!" I scream. Luckily, there was barely anyone there.
"Hah, yeah right. I know she's my mom. If you're not back by sundown, you'll be in trouble." He threatens as he walks out to the bus. I turn to a shocked Matt.
"I'm sorry about him. H-he just hates me." I apologize.
"What a dickhole." I go to apologize again but look up at him in shock. "Why would he treat you that way?"
"Well, we don't have the same dad. My mom cheated on his dad...with someone. We don't know who. She left to go find him we think."
"Doesn't give him the right to treat you like that. It's not your fault." He says with anger.
"Hey, dweeb." A tall boy, around Lewis's age with blonde hair and the same stunning green eyes as Matt says. "Got yourself a girlfriend?" He teases.
"Hey Jasper, and no. She's just coming over for a science project." Matt says, brushing off his anger. We all start walking out to the parking lot.
"Okay, if that's what you have to tell mom and dad." I laugh along with the two boys, and we approach a white and black g-wagon.
"Holy crap, a g-wagon." I say under my breath.
"It was a birthday present." Jasper says. I get in the middle back seat, and Matt gets in the passenger seat. "I never got your name."
"Bailey Gentry." I state.
"You have that asshat of a brother, don't you?" I nod. "Well I'm sorry for you." He says.
"Thanks." I say with a small smile. He starts to drive off, a few minutes later, we pass my house, the bus had just dropped off the kids, and Lewis was staring at the car. I look ahead of me and ignore him. We arrive at a two story house, the exterior was a nice blue color, accented by the greenery around it. We hop out and walk to the front door. Inside was beautiful, a grand staircase to lead upstairs, and the rest of the downstairs behind it.
"Welcome home, kids!" A sweet woman's voice calls out. From behind the staircase, a lady with brown hair and those eyes. She gasps when she sees me, then smiles.
"Well, who's this?" She asks.
"I'm Bailey, Matt and I have a science project." I answer her.
"Well, lucky for you I just made cookies!"
"We'll be upstairs, mom." We start heading up the stairs.
"Leave that door open!" She calls and we laugh. His room was a decent size, posters of bands like Panic! At the Disco were plastered everywhere on the dark blue wall, his bed was a jumble of blue and white plaid sheets, and a navy blue comforter.
"It's not much." He shrugs.
"It's better than mine. I have to share a room." He winces and heads to his closet.
"Ah, here it is." He brings out a poster board. I examine his room, he has a desk with a laptop and printer by his window, and that was about it. Simple, but nice.
"Matt, I need help." A girls voice orders. I look over my shoulder to see a girl with long, blonde curls to her waist. With the green eyes.
"With what, Jasmine?" He demands.
"Well, I see you have a date. I'll ask Jasper to do it." He rolls his eyes as she walks away.
"Sisters." He complains. I laugh.
"I wouldn't know."
"You have it worse though, with that dick of a brother." He shakes his head in disapproval. We start our project by simply looking up facts and printing pictures off the internet for our poster. My phone dings.
Lewis: it's almost sundown.
Me: I know. I'll have someone bring me home
Lewis: be quick.
I sigh. "Lewis wants me home."
"He can suck it." Matt replies.
"I actually will be in trouble, with everyone. I'll probably never be allowed to leave the p—house again." I almost slipped, but he didn't notice it.
"Okay, I'll get Jasper." He runs downstairs and I follow him, grabbing my bag on the way out.
"Matt, you stay here. Jasper you bring her home." Matt's mom says.
"I never got your name." I say to her. She smiles.
"I'm Nora." She says.
"I love that name."
"Thank you!" She gives me a small hug. And tugs Matt to the kitchen with her. I follow Jasper to his g-wagon and hop in the passenger seat.
"Don't worry about why he has to stay home." Jasper starts. "It's his night to set up the dinner table." I laugh.
"It's okay."
"So you live in that mansion, right?" I nod my head. "Alrighty." I pull out my phone.
Me: I'm on my way, make sure nobody is out.
Lewis: Already thought of that. Be quick.
We start going down my long driveway, past the trees I never really look at.
"Wow." Jasper says in awe.
"It's really not much. It's really crowded in there." I say.
"It's still pretty." I see James open the front door angrily.
"Uhoh." I say.
"Who's that?" Jasper demands.
"Lewis's dad." I say, fear lacing my voice. Jasper locks the doors. That won't stop him. Jasper doesn't know that.
"No, Jasper just let me go." I cry.
"Is he going to hurt you?" He demands, looking in my eyes with his matching green ones.
"No." I reassure him.
"Are you sure?"
"Yes." He unlocks the door, and quickly grabs my hand and a pen. He puts his number down.
"If you ever need to leave, I can pick you up. Just text or call me." I nod and get out of the car before James could approach.
"What the hell were you doing?" He screams. He's never screamed at me like that before.
"I was just doing a science project!" I yell back. I watch as he sniffs the air. He calms down a little. I hear Jasper pull out, a look of worry on his face, I wave him away. When he was gone, James grabs my wrist and pulls me close.
"Listen here, you're not going to turn out like your mother. You hear me?" I gulp, and he tugs on my wrist harder. "I said 'you hear me'?" He growls.
"Yes, beta." I lower my head in submission.
"Good, now go clean something."
