I blink my eyes to focus, Opening them both wide, The darkness is everywhere, Secrets in corners do hide. Something lurks in the dark, Ready to pounce, it does stare. Waiting to catch me in, It's deadly, unfathomable snare. And as I run through the cave, I scrape and fall, fumble And yet I dive into the darkness, Into nothingness I stumble. I'm ready to give up, Frustrated I drop to the ground, Tired, distressed and broken, Nowhere's heard a human sound. And as my tears fall down, Mix with the earth and soil, My resolve to reach the goal, Is crushed and is a spoil. And then I see you there, Holding a lantern steady, "Come here girl," you beckon, To rescue you are ready. I whimper in relief, You reach out to catch my hand, I draw them back, As they're covered in dirty sand. You gently take them And dust the dirt off in one go, And lead me on, forward, The path the light does show. The memories come rushing along....
