I sit at the kitchen table, finishing up the summer homework for English and Math. Music flows smoothly in my ears as I jot down several numbers and variables.
One of my earbuds come out and I look up confused at what happened. My mom stands next to me with her purse in her arms.
"Hey, Mom," I say as I finish off the very last question. I close up my notebook and I look back at her. "What's up?"
Mom takes a seat next to me and she smiles a bit. "Your father called and he wants you to spend the summer with him. I think you should go."
My smile fades and I glare at her. "I'm not going. I don't even like his wife or her daughter. They're both annoying and fake."
Mom rolls her eyes. "Cindy isn't that bad and Ava is an angel."
"How can you say that about your ex-husband's wife and step-kid?" I ask in disgust.
Cindy hates me and I hate her. Ava hates me and I hate her. Dad tries to get us to get along and to talk. We don't do it. It's just how we operate.
"Aaron and I never saw eye to eye and I don't hate him and I'm pretty sure he doesn't hate me. Aaron's a good guy and I want you to spend time with your father. So you're going, whether you like it or not."
