Flickering candle shadows.
circle the ceiling like vultures,
waiting for the wick's last gasp,
As I peer from my cover.

Heart beats the last marathon mile
One more taste of air forever
sum up my deeds before his arrival
And ask, did I do enough?

floorboards squeak, death is here.
Light falterers, shadows merge,
Slide down the wall to my side
Like gargoyles lining carrion

Impatient night encroaches light , and snuffs the candle first
He blends in the dark with the wick's last ember
floats on the tendril of smoke to peer where I list
An acrid smell of wax, the last I remember
