Right away I learned,
'I don't know,' is no answer at all.
But he would have me so terrified
I'd still sometimes say to him, 'I don't know'.
There is never anyone around
When you need them.
I had just finished work;
Still wearing my uniform.
My keys were between my fingers- always.
But they were useless.
My whole body went limp
When he punched my jaw.
I dropped them straight away,
Along with my purse.
I still don't know where he came from.
I remember seeing a bright light
Flash behind my eyes,
And heard a loud crack
From my neck as it snapped back.
He only hit me once,
And didn't knock me out cold.
I'm glad I remained semi-conscious.
I think it would have scared me more
To have woken up in the back of his SUV
Trying to figure out what had happened.
That wouldn't have taken very long.
All the same,
I'd never felt my heart race so fast
As did once I was in the back of his car.
After he punched me,
It seemed before I ever hit the ground,
He flipped me on my stomach
And had my hands behind my back,
Where he fastened the flexi-cuffs.
'Gotcha, finally. Mine.'
He picked me up
And flung me over his shoulder
With my head hanging upside down.
With no one around to see,
He threw me in the back seat of his SUV
And tossed a blanket over me.
The mood ring girl suddenly came to mind.
How small she was; not tall enough to see
Above the partition and out the window.
I was absurdly grateful
For her not having witnessed
My being stolen.
I kicked back at him,
And he grabbed hold of my ankles
With a grip too crushing to ever overcome.
'Let's mark this one down as a freebie,
But don't ever try to fight me again;
I promise you won't get off
With just a warning the next time.'
He squeezed even harder on my ankles.
An excruciating show of strength.
How could anyone be so strong?
I didn't dare speak.
Didn't dare kick out again.
He'd made his point.
In what seemed less than a minute
He was in the front seat,
Driving me to his playground.
Yeah, he was methodical alright;
A clockwork Monster
Doing what he does best.
Something I'm sure he'd done before.
'Round, like a circle in a spiral
Like a wheel within a wheel,
Never ending or beginning,
On an ever-spinning reel'
~Bergman, Legrand
