"I can't... I can't afford to lose you."
Those damned words echoed in Riza's ears, mocking her, taunting her. Those were the words of Roy Mustang himself; the very man she had watched grow from a childish man to a colonel who was fit to run the country.
Who should have run the country.
She unfurled her day-old braids as she stared blankly at her reflection, her eyes dead as a fish who'd been hooked for days. She was still in a state of disbelief, honestly. How could the colonel, her colonel, just not be there anymore? She'd no longer see his dark eyes catch the evening stars, or the way his neck jerked when the fullmetal alchemist entered the room. She'd no longer see his raven hair messied by a night of forced labour, or the smile he gave her before she set down his paperwork for the day. A sob caught in her throat as she reminisced, and it wasn't long before she began to cry.
She cried as she walked into the kitchen.
She cried as she wrote countless notes, each addressed to the people she'd come to love throughout both war and peace.
She cried as she pulled her gun from its dusty resting place, her fingers tracing along the familiar dents.
But she did not cry as she held it to her head, and she did not cry as she pulled the trigger.
