The Lies

Ryan's voice trails off and he looks away like he wants to cry.

And then out of the blue... he does.

I instantly hug him, and he hugs me back tightly.

After me and Violet calm him down, he finishes the story.

"And then... I... I just ran away crying. I didn't look back. Honestly, I never want to see her ever again. And I've tried moving on. I'm dating this girl named Sasha. She's cute, popular, kinda bossy, but sweet... kinda."

Ellie comes over out of nowhere when we're ending the conversation.

"H-hey, Ryan. Can we... can we talk?" she asks.

He just stares at her for a while, then looks down and says: "Sure."

=Ellie's Perspective=

I'm so nervous. My hands are shaking.

"I'm so sorry," I say. But I know that it won't help him be any less upset at me.

He doesn't answer for a second, like he's thinking.

"You know what? It's fine," he says to my surprise.

"Your kidding. I'm guilty, and what I said was wrong and I know it and I know sorry won't fix it but.."

"Nope. It's completely fine," he says, but I know he's lying.

"Stop lying! I know I'm an awful person!" I shout at him.

He grabs my shoulders gently but also pretty tight.

"Ellie! It's okay! Look at my face!" he says, so I look. He actually looks like he's being honest. I'm relieved.

"So.. can we start over? As friends?" I ask.

"No," he says. "I don't think we can."

I frown. After a moment he says:

"I'm kidding! I don't want to be friends, but.... I would like to be a couple."

I look at him with a huge smile on my face.

"I'd like that, too!" I say.

"So it's agreed. May I walk you to class?"

"You may. Wait.. but my mom.."

"No. Don't get her involved. Let's just get to class."

The bell rings and we walk inside holding hands.

=Addie's Perspective=

I had no idea what they talked about, so I called Ellie quickly.

To my total shock she said she and Ryan were a couple now and he had forgiven her. I said goodbye and hung up.

"What'd she say?" Violet asks. We get up, because of the bell.

"Ryan's cheating on Sasha," I say. "He's dating Ellie now."

"So? Sasha's so mean. She bullies people and I don't like her. So what if Ryan cheats on her?"

"But it sounds like Ryan just let the whole drama thing with Ellie go."

"So? Forgive and forget right?"

"Violet!" I shout. Maybe a little too loudly. I get a few stares.

I stop her and I make her look me straight in the eye.

"Don't you see?" I say quietly. "Ellie broke Ryan's heart and he's trying to get her back. I bet he'll cheat on her with Sasha now and... Violet there will be so much more drama!"

"So what do we do?" Violet panics.

"For now... we can just... go to our classes and.... just see what happens."

"But.."

"For now there's just nothing we can do. We should have never gotten involved. Now we have to watch Ellie get cheated on. And there's nothing we can do."
