"Do you promise we'll see each other again?" I asked anxiously, looking into Dally's eyes. We had been best friends for as long as I could remember, but Dally was moving away. He was going to some city that I had already forgotten the name of and leaving me all alone. He was my only friend.

"Jenny, I promise that I'll never forget you, and one day, we'll see each other again," he said, "but right now, I have to go."

I hugged him goodbye, with tears clouding my vision. He hugged me back and then pulled away. Before he left, he pressed a metal object into my small hand.

"Remember me," he whispered as he turned to go. He climbed into his family's old, rusted car and drove away. I didn't hear from him again.
