I stared at Jax eyes wide, not knowing what to say. Jax and his father were never close, even before he left Jax and Amanda with no father figure in their life. It came to my surprise that he would even ask him for anything, let alone money.

Jax made it clear he only talked to his dad when it was necessary like involving his step sister or Amanda.

"Why would you ask him for money?" I finally managed to say. "You know when you ask him for something he's going to want something in return."

He sighs. "I had no other option. It was that or get jumped again-"

"Wait, we'll finish talking later." I lower my voice as Marissa appears besides Jax with a tray of food and a smile on her face.

"You'll never believe what just happened." She says, excitement coming off of her.

Jax and I keep catching each other's glance as Marissa goes off ranting about a party she got invited to this weekend. I couldn't help but zone out as I thought about the situation Jax was in.

I had tried to offer my help but he beat me to it by going to his dad. He really was not taking it up with Ricky if he had to go to his father for help.

I couldn't help but wonder if Jax owed his father money back or if he wanted something in return from him. The first time Jax asked his dad for money he had to reimburse him by letting him see Amanda for the weekends. To this day Amanda has to go see him and his other family whether she likes it or not.

"Emma?" Marissa snaps me back to reality.

I raise my eyebrows at her in confusion. "Huh?"

"Did you hear what I said?" She asks.

Jax was ignoring the both of us by now and eating from Marissa's plate without her realizing. I watched as he snuck his hand back around her arm and grabbed a hand full of fries, shoving them in his mouth.

"Oh yeah, yeah totally." I lied, not wanting her to know I didn't hear a single thing she said.

  "So you'll come?" She asks.

"Uhh, where?" I squint my eyes.

She sighs. "There's a party this weekend in the City I got invited to. It's super fancy and I get to bring a plus one."

"Are you talking about Kevin's party?" Jax jumps in, chewing as he talked.

Marissa looks at him, seeing a fry in his hand and gasps. She slaps his hand making him drop it. Instead of doing anything he rolls his eyes and licks his fingers as he looks at me.

Feeling uneasy, I look away from him and try hiding the smile forming on my lips as I bring my hand up to lean my face on.

"You know Kevin?" Marissa asks, moving her tray away from Jax as she spoke.

He nods. "I have class with him. He invited me too. His dad throws some business party every year and Kevin sees it as an excuse for free beer."

"I want to go." Marissa squeals.

"You really don't. Hunter and I went last year and it's so boring. Trust me it's not worth it." He says.

"It is if I get to dress up and eat free expensive food. Emma come with me, please." She pleaded.

I shake my head. "Hunter will never let me go."

"He will if I go." Jax says.

"But you're not." I looked at him.

"Do you want me to?" He asked.

His eyes locked with mine as we stared at each other completely ignoring there was anyone around.

  "Yes."
