Kaila loves it when it rains. But she doesn't like the mud. Softly, her footsteps alight upon the grass, treading wet dirt all over the soccer field. She looks up, eyes closed, and feels the light drop of acid rain on her face. The quickening has come and all must find shelter. She feels a presence behind her. "Warren, how much time before the quickening consumes us all?" she gasps aloud as visions of past deaths and resurrections battle in her Persistent Memory Unit.

Warren looks at her, at a loss for words. He runs, leaving her to die a tiny insignificant death among an infinite number of deaths she has been preordained to live for. Kaila sighs; she's used to this. Resigned, she lies down on the cold, wet grass and picks a pose to be found dead in.

But death does not come this time around.
