Kai's POV
I told them everything- from how my dream begins until it ends, and even how I wake up in cold sweat. As I was explaining, I could see the terror on their faces; eyes widened with their mouths agape, listening to every tiny detail there was. I couldn't blame them, I would've been the same if I were them.
"So.. so all of this happens, in one night?" I hear Cole mutter, his hand covering his mouth as his eyes stared at the floor.
I nodded. "It gets worse sometimes." It was a little slip out from my mouth— I didn't mean to say it. But they had already heard it.
"What do you mean, 'it gets worse'?" Nya asked.
My gaze shifted to the side, avoiding her gaze. I couldn't look her in the eye after not being able to tell her the truth. "Sometimes it shows me something different, that's all." I quickly said and laughed. "It's hard to follow when the smallest details change."
It got quiet. Too quiet. I could hear my own breathing; soft but quick. I wanted to say something, to open my mouth and speak, but couldn't. My mouth was glued shut, nothing could come out, not even a single sigh. There was panic rising in my chest, the heavy heaving of my chest and my fingers fidgeting didn't make it any better either.
I felt a hand on my shoulder. My shoulders tensed and I looked to my side, seeing Jay standing there. "Kai, we understand. I'm sure it's hard."
"Wow, such kind words from blabbermouth." Cole snickered quietly.
I rolled my eyes at Cole's comment while Jay rushed to smack Cole on the head. "You little-!"
"Okay okay, watch it you two." Zane gently held Jay's arm and grabbed Cole by the collar of his shirt. "You need to stop doing this."
Jay scoffed with his arms crossed over his chest. "You're lucky he stepped in." He mumbled with a pout.
"Oh shut it, you couldn't do anything even if you tried."
"Okay seriously, stop it." Nya said, her voice sounding as strict as ever. "Or else I'm going to have you both do chores for the next month."
Honestly, they were on chore duty anyway.
—————
It was the next day.
My body was weak from the lack of sleep. Again, the same damn dream. Will it ever leave me alone? Why am I being haunted by some dream with the same kid in it? It's— weird.
Master Wu decided to send me, Cole, and Jay on a mission in Ninjago City. I was kind of glad, I've been cooped up in the monastery ever since that dream occurred. The down part? Being stuck with two knuckleheads who argue twenty four-seven.
"Are you sure they should come?" I muttered to Master Wu. I glanced at Jay and Cole, who were already yelling at each other.
"They need to get out," he patted my shoulder as I put on a mask. "And... so do you. Now, hurry."
I looked at them bickering and sighed, pushing them apart. "Let's go you two, or else I'ma beat you up."
I wasn't looking at them but I knew they rolled their eyes; they always roll their eyes when I say that. It was expected from them.
"Why are you wearing your mask?" Jay asked as I rolled my eyes.
I looked at him. "Are you dumb?"
"Duh. It's Jay, Kai." I hear Cole snicker.
"You know what, you meanie," Jay smacked Cole on the head. "I hate you."
Cole rolled his eyes again. "I hate you too."
"Okay you two lovebirds, can we get going now?"
Now that really pissed them off. They were yelling at me for an hour or so while we walked out the monastery, but come on, they really were lovebirds if they kept bickering with each other like an old couple. Not my fault.
—————
We walked around Ninjago City for hours, trying to find where exactly we were supposed to go. I listened to nonstop bickering... and I mean it when I say that. Jay and Cole really wouldn't shut up. Why did Master Wu have to send me with them? Where were we supposed to go anyway? We were lost, literally lost.
"I'm hungryyyyyyyy," Jay whined and held his stomach. I heard it rumble a little as he continued whining. "Can we stop and eat somewhere?"
"Like where, hmm?" Cole asked with sarcasm. "There's nothing around here!"
"There has to be! I'll eat anything, I swear!"
I looked around for a little before turning back to the other two with a forced smile. "Let's go eat noodles at Skylar's. I'm sure she wouldn't mind."
Both Cole and Jay looked at me weirdly. "Is it because you like her? Oh I'm sorry- she likes you?" Jay asked with a bit of annoyance in his voice.
"First off, I don't like her," I rolled my eyes. "Secondly, aren't you hungry?"
"Fine, but we're just eating and then leaving, alright?!"
"Yeah yeah, let's hurry up, I don't wanna be out here any longer than we need to." Cole huffed as he walked.
He looked funny when he walked. I'm sure Jay noticed it too because he ran up to him and whispered something that made Cole hit him. His face was extremely red. I wonder what Jay told him for him to react that way. How funny.
—————
We got there and ate quietly, which was surprising since I was stuck with blabber mouths. But it was nice to sit in peace and just... enjoy everything. I felt like I had no worries while I ate. Why couldn't this peace stay? It would be nice to have no more worries, so that I could go back to normal instead of being how I am now. Really, it does sound foolish, but it would be lovely. I guess it's just not for me though.
I was so lost in thought that I didn't realize Skylar had taken a seat next to me, and I could already feel Jay's eyes piercing through me as I looked at her, jumping a little. She smiled and I just gave a tiny one before looking away and eating my noodles still. Why is she sitting next to me? I thought. I'm trying to eat in peace here...
"Kai, I need to ask you something." She said. "Alone. It's important."
Jay stood up from his seat and slammed his hands on the table— irritation was written all over his face. "Look, Skylar, you need to back off right now—"
"It's okay, Jay," I said, standing up myself. "I'll be right back." I was now looking at Skylar. "Hurry and make it quick, I don't have time."
Okay, that last part was a lie. But really, there was no time, especially when Jay was irritated. If I didn't say something, he probably would've been ranting on right now about something that wouldn't make sense to me.
We were in the kitchen away from Cole and Jay, mainly because Jay was already trying to eavesdrop on us, and I could hear Cole yelling at him to sit down. I wouldn't even doubt if Cole was holding him down either— it's not the first time this happened.
"So, what did you need to ask me?" I asked, leaning on the counter. "I need to hurry and get back on my mission."
She tapped her fingers on the counter. "I heard about that dream you've been having, that nightmare one? I need to know one important detail. It's none of my business about the rest of the details but I need to know this specific one."
I stared at her. "How did you—"
"How I know isn't what you should focus on. I'll tell you later, but right now I just need to know— what did that kid look like?"
I blinked. "What?"
"The kid in your dream, Kai. What did he look like? Or rather so, what do you remember of him?"
"Well, he looked about.. six-ish? He had blond hair, with these bright, green eyes." I shifted my weight from one leg to the other. "Hmm, he had these tiny, light freckles across the bridge of his nose, too. And... that's all I remember."
Skylar was silent for some time. Then, she spoke. "I saw him."
It was now my turn to be silent once again. "... You're joking."
"I swear on my father that I saw him. He was walking with a hood over his head before you guys came. He was, like, asking for something I think?" She nodded. "Yeah, I don't know what he was asking for, his voice was low. But it was like a desperate plea to be heard."
"Do you know which way he went?" I slammed my hands on the counter by accident, but it didn't matter right now. What matters is me finding that kid. Now.
"He went right, towards the main square in Ninjago City," she said. I didn't really pay attention to the rest of her words, since I was already walking out of the kitchen. "— be careful!" Was the last thing I heard from her.
—————
"Why are we in the main square again?" Cole asked as we walked around. "There's no point if we're just walking—"
"Shh." I mumbled. "I'm looking for someone."
"Oh god." Jay sighed. "Kai, let's just go home. Whoever you're looking for isn't here."
"We don't know that." Please, please be here.
There was a tug on my sleeve, but I didn't budge. Jay and Cole can't get me to leave, I can't leave. Something's telling me that he's here, right in this square, begging for help. I don't know why, I know nothing of this kid. I just know I can't go.
"Kai, good lord get your ass moving right now or else—"
"Fine, we'll leave. Let me go." I huffed and pulled my arm away from Jay's grip, stumbling back a little.
I heard a thud beside me, and my gaze immediately shifted to where the noise was. "Oh, my! I'm sorry!" I said, kneeling down to apologize.
  "It's fine, 's happen a lot."
I froze. I know, I thought. I know that voice...
Hood. Blonde hair peeking out. Tiny frame, about a six year old's frame. Semi-high voice.
He looked at me with a shy smile.
  Green eyes.
  "It's— it's you!"
