"See even when I'm a mess
I still put on a vest
With a S on my chest"
-Alicia Keys x Superwoman
Prologue
Mani, always had to make a way for herself, leaving her time to date at a minimum but she just couldn't help how she felt when she saw him. He was her weakness. She found herself daydreaming about them all the time. How would it feel to be his girl? "Is he really amazing how he portrays to be?" She wondered this daily. You could call her obsessive, because she literally thought about this man all day. He was meant for her and she was sure of it. God had made him just for her, but how could she convince him of that when he saw her as a friend.
"Yo Mani, what you daydreaming bout?" Snapping out of her crazy thoughts Mani continued walking with her best-friend, "I'm not day-dreaming just got a lot on my mind." She mumbled. "Ok, and as your best friend you shouldn't be acting funny, you can always talk to me." Mani knew she could always talk to Nasir about anything but she just didn't know how to tell her best-friend that she loved him... was in love with him. She understood that they were still young but she knew what she felt for Nasir was real, and what she felt for him was far from a phase.
They'd been through almost everything together and it took almost every situation possible for Mani to realize Nasir was the one, but what she feared was that it sadly was to late... Nasir and Mani had been best friends for a long time now and he'd seen her at her lowest, and that made Mani wondered if Nasir thought she was damaged goods, and knew he deserved better than her.
2 Years Earlier
"Hi can I sit right here." Looking up Mani could tell he wanted to say no, but he really didn't have a choice. Rolling her eyes real dramatic she watched the ugly fat boy move his book-bag so that she could take a seat. Irritated was a understatement Mani was pissed. Her parents made her move to Flint with her auntie Faye, for school and she couldn't understand why.
Flint was a dangerous city, and Mani being from Norfolk, Virginia didn't like the fact that her parents gave her the ultimate choice of living in Flint with her aunt or to Detroit with her granny and though Flint should've been her last option, she didn't want to be on lock-down with her annoying ass grandma her senior year.
Mani had nobody to blame but herself for her actions. She'd put her parents in a position to have to punish her and she knew it. It was all catching up to her, and she was spending her senior year paying for it.
Mani was so busy trying to please her boo Roland she didn't see her losing herself in the process.
Roland was three years older than Mani, and had her mind gone. She'd met him at a basketball game, and when he asked for her number she couldn't believe he actually wanted something to do with her so she gave it to him with no problem making one of the biggest mistakes of her life.
Being with Roland made Mani make many dumb decisions. Being that she was only 17, and Roland was 20 she wasn't ready for the lifestyle he lived . He sold drugs and was one of the best in Norfolk. Mani was happy she had a dude who supported her financially but everything that glittered wasn't gold.
In the beginning of their relationship Roland treated Mani like the queen she was. Never harming her, or putting her in situations to get laughed at, but after while true colors began to show and Mani learned that Roland was abusive and a cheater. She'd gotten so stuck into his web, that she left her parents no choice but to ship her off to another state where she could begin a new life... So deep in her thoughts Mani didn't even hear the bell ring, causing her to be late to her 5th hour. She was one of the last people to leave the class, and noticed that the boy she was sitting by was too.
She looked at him and scoffed, making her way into the ghetto hallways of Northwestern High School. Observing her surroundings she was pissed. "Why the fuck would they send me to this lean on me ass school" she murmured to herself. Everything about Northwestern was ratchet. From the females to the niggas, to the classrooms to the teachers they were ratchet.
Arriving to class Mani noticed the fat boy she sat by in her last class, and made sure she wasn't stuck sitting next to him again getting her a seat all the way in the back. After 5th hour was over the day seemed to go by fast, and before she knew it she was at home bored, wishing she was back in Norfolk with her real friends.
It was the first day of her senior year and she was spending it on the porch while everyone else was probably doing something fun. Mani aunt stayed on Iroquois and Baker, which was on the Northside where all the ghetto shit happened, so sitting on the porch was actually entertaining to her, as she watched niggas drive down the street being extra chatty while listening to their music. She'd been so bored watching the cars that she didn't even notice the street lights come on until her auntie yelled for her to come in. Flint was a waste of space to Mani, but it was something she'd have to get used to cause it was considered her home now.
