Far out ino the ocean, the water is as blue as the petal s of the loveliest cornflower and as clear as the purest glass, but it is very deep too, it goes far deeper as any anchor rope will go. It is down here where the sea folk lives. There were the Sea King and his wife, along with their children, three Princes, and four Princesses. But the youngest Prince was the most beautiful, John Laurens. His darkened skin was covered in darker specials of color all over his body, Some claimed they were kisses from the sea gods to bless him and wish him the best, A funny title for one covered in freckles, his long, curly brown hair suited him beautifully, And his eyes were as blue as the deep sea. But like everyone one in this world, He had no feet, his body ended in a fishtail...
The Prince loved to hear stories of the world above him. He asked his mother countless times to tell him and retell him all the knew of ships, Cities, People, and animals. The flowers there smelled so sweet... The flowers here had no scent.
"When you are 18." His mother would say, playing with the siren's curly hair. "You shall be allowed to rise up, out of the sea and sit on the rocks to watch the Moon rise and the ships pass."
That sounded like pure heaven....
On the Princes's 18th birthday, He swam to the surface without a moment of hesitation. He managed to hoist himself up onto the rocks. He watched in awe as the moon rose to the sky as the ship began to sale by. It truly was beautiful here... As was the man on the ship.He watched the man for what seemed like hours, completely mesmerized by his beauty. How could a human be so beautiful...? Surely he was a god...
When the Prince returned home that night he asked his mother, "If men do no drown in our sea, Do they live forever?" "No." She replied. "They too must die. And their lifetimes are much shorter than ours. We can live to be 300 years old, But, When our time has come, we turn into mere sea foam and are tossed around by the waves till we disappear. We have no soul, Humans beings have a soul which lives on forever, Long after their bodies have decayed. The soul shall rise through the air, up past the shining star, Just as we rise to the surface. They go up to a place beautiful we shall never know."
"I would gladly give up my 300 years If I could be a human for a day and later share that heavenly realm wi-" "You must not think like that John." His mother snapped. "We are much better than the folks up there and we are happy where we are."
But John wasn't better off...Nor was he happy. He wanted to badly to be part of the world above... He would give up everything for just one day. Every night John would return to the surface to watch the same ship, sale out to sea, the cheerful music would fill the air with cheer, the Prince had never heard such a beautiful music before... And the man... he was far beyond words with beauty.
