O Wonder

O wonder
That you know the destruction
My gaze has swept across,
And yet still you meet my eyes
And you do not flinch away.

O wonder
That you know the words
My lips have had to utter,
And yet you kiss me sweet as honey -
Enough to drive away the bitter taste.

O wonder
That you know the sorrow
My heart has felt,
And yet you easily made it a home,
Coaxing light into all its darkest spots.

O wonder
That you know the blood
My hands have touched,
And yet you lace our fingers together
As though it were mere breathing.

O wonder
That you know the darkest paths
My feet have walked,
And yet you tread beside me fearless
With love as our only compass.

O wonder -
If I told you more would you go?
I want you to stay more than anything
But you must know what you face
If you hold me through the nights.

O wonder -
Will you stay with me?
My soul is old and my heart is true
And although these hands built a nation,
Our love is to be my magnum opus.
