Tears streamed down my face as I sat on the sidewalk with only the crushed flowers from the shop around the corner. I stared up into the sky, wondering what I ever did to deserve such a sad fate. What God was I praying to every day that decided I deserved this?

Hours earlier...
I anxiously stared at the clock for what felt like days, awaiting the sound of the annoying bell, signaling the end of class. Seconds ticked by, when finally...the miraculous sound reached our ears, and everyone rushed out of class with the teacher frantically informing us about the homework for the weekend.
"Going to visit the boyfriend?" my best friend smirked as she leaned against the locker beside mine.
"Yeah," I chuckled to myself as I smiled sadly.
"Hey, cheer up. I'm sure he has a chance. By senior year, the two of you will be walking across the stage graduating. Together. Trust me."
"The last time I trusted you, I ended up with a black eye and a broken rib," I glared at her as I started my way towards my car.
"Trust me, when it comes to you, he won't be giving up," she laughs.
I really hope so. I smile as I wave goodbye to her before driving to the hospital.

I gently knocked on the wooden door, waiting for the soft, kind voice that I longed to hear all day, respond. The moment I did, I pushed the door open and ran towards the hospital bed, wrapping my arms around the boy I fell hopelessly in love with.
"How's the treatment?" I asked with my face still buried in his shoulder.
"Better, but...no donors yet..." he responds.
"I'm sure there will be one soon, don't lose hope just yet," I smile.
He smiles sadly at me as he cups my cheeks. "I love you, Alex, so much. Since freshman year 'til now...and I hope that you'll find someone who loves you more than me."
"W-what are you talking about, Carter? I have you." I smiled hopefully.
"I don't know how long I have, and I-"
"Don't say that! You promised that we would graduate high school together. You promised me th-"
I was cut off by the sight of Carter clutching his chest and the heart monitor beside him going crazy.
"Carter? Carter?! CARTER!" I cry as the doctor and nurses run in, pulling me off the bed and places a life support machine on him.
I watch as the tears blur my vision and the monitor reaches a long, never-ending beep. The doctor starts up the defibrillator as I start sobbing and sobbing with each jolt of energy courses through Carter's body and he remains immobile. The doctor holding the defibrillator turns off the machine and checks his watch.
"Carter Hayes, time of death, 14:47."
I clutched the flowers in my hands to my chest, sobbing, "You promised..."
