Subjunctive Past

There are many things that are pretty awesome about the rest of the subjunctive tenses, aside from the fact that I am not covering the subjunctive future tenses since they are not used in modern Spanish. First, they require a very small amount of explanation because the main concept of Subjunctive still remains the same for these next 3 tenses. Second, there is no preterite past tense in subjunctive, so preterite vs. imperfect need not apply here. It's going to be pretty fun.

To create a subjunctive imperfect stem, you must know how to conjugate the preterite form of ellos/ellas. Instead of using the preterite of a stem, you use the 3rd person plural of the preterite, minus -ron. For example:

Comer → comieron →comier- →comiera

I'll jump straight to the verb conjugations. There are actually 2 tables of conjugations that I should go over. You can use either one, but the first of them is more widespread, so I personally recommend using the first one, though you'll be understood either way.

Subjuntivo imperfecto 1:

Yo: -ra

Tú: -ras

Él, ella, ud: -ra

Nosotros: -ramos

Vosotros: -rais

Ellos/ellas, uds: -ran

Espero que comieras hoy. |I hope that you ate today.

Deseo que me llamaras. |I wish that you called me.

Maravillo que ella hablara ayer. |I wonder if she spoke yesterday.

No pienso que fueras veraz. |I don't think that you were truthful.

Subjuntivo imperfecto 2: (Note: if I have gotten these wrong, please let me know; I have not studied these endings very much.)

Yo: -se

Tú: -ses

Él, ella, ud: -se

Nosotros: -semos

Vosotros: -seis

Ellos/ellas, uds: -sen

I'll just give the subjunctive verbs here:

- Comer →comierses

- Llamar →llamarses

- Hablar →hablare

- Ser → Fueses
