Chapter 2—Lavender

I finished unpacking and headed downstairs.

Sir and Madam were nowhere to be found, but I ran into Charlie.

“Luna, did you meet the boss?”

“Yes, I did.”

“How did it go?”

“Eh, he’s quite the charmer.”

“I sense your sarcasm.”

I grinned. “He’s…odd.”

“You’ll get used to it if you last long enough.”

“What do you mean if I last long enough?” I asked.

“Oh, you don’t know anything about this place, do you?”

“I’m new to the area. I’m quite a long way from home, and I’d never heard of the Vincent family prior to my hiring.”

“Well, Shadow goes through many maids…all of them are out of here within a week.”

“All of them, as in every single one?”

Charlie nodded.

“Why?”

“They can’t stand him. They think he’s too demanding. They think he’s too strange for their liking. They feel as if he’s overly suspicious,” he explained.

“Should I be concerned?”

“A little thing like you…well, we’ve never had someone like you in this house. It’s quite a change. You seem so humble and timid. The past maids have been…let’s just say, a little more outgoing and crazy.”

“I’ll take that as a ‘yes, I should be concerned.’”

“So…where are you off to now?”

“The backyard. Shadow told me to meet him there.”

“Ah, the garden, it’s a lovely setting. But be careful and don’t touch the lavender. You can smell, but do not touch it. I never warned the other maids about this because I’m not supposed to, but you seem like a weak one.”

“I don’t know if I should thank you or if I should be offended. What’s wrong with the lavender?”

“I can’t say. I—”

He was cut off by Shadow’s deep voice.

“Charles, are you distracting my new employee?”

“You’ve got to admit, she—she’s a…beautiful distraction.”

“Maybe so…”

I glanced at Shadow, who gave me an icy glare.

He sort of just agreed with Charlie’s compliment, yet he’s giving me somewhat of a death glare.

“So…what were you two talking about?”

“Well, boss, I was just telling her about the…set-up of the house.”

“Sure you were. Luna, come.”

I thought, really? He didn’t even say “come with me” or “please come.” He just ordered me to “come” like I’m some type of pet or something. Who does this guy think he is?

I followed him out the glass doors and into the backyard.

There were lights around the patio.

The rest was a vast land of different flowers and plants. There was a tiny pond with a small bridge over it. Across the bridge, there was a gazebo surrounded by lavender.
