Chapter 17—Oh…Well

Charlie drove down a dirt trail, leading into a forest.

I glanced out the window, as we passed a small run-down shack.

A few minutes later, the car stopped.

“Lorraine, he was serious,” I whispered.

My gaze was focused on the old well in front of the car.

Dude number one and two pulled us out of the vehicle.

“Can’t we work this out?” Lorraine asked. “How much money do you want? A million? Two million?”

“Being paid off isn’t an option,” Charlie said.

“Charles, you were such a nice man. What happened?” she asked.

“People change. Plus, your son hurt my granddaughter, so I’m depriving him of his own happiness by taking away his love and his mother.”

“Can’t you guys tie us up like normal people?” I requested.

“This is much more fun,” Dude number one stated.

“Off you go,” Charlie said, signaling them.

Each of the guys lifted us up and in about two seconds…they dropped us.

It was about a fifteen-foot drop.

Lorraine and I hit the bottom.

We had a few scrapes here and there, but at least we were alive.

The bottom was just dirt.

“Good luck getting out! See you…never!” Charlie called, looking down into the well.

“I hate you!” I shouted.

“I hate you more,” he responded, and then we heard footsteps.

Those footsteps became very distant.

And then we heard the car engine.

“We’re stuck,” I complained, leaning against the side of the well.

“There has to be a way out of here.”

“There’s no way we can climb out of here, and no one knows where we are.”

“We’re going to die, aren’t we?” Lorraine questioned.

“I really, really hope not. This is a sad way to go. Being stuck in a well and possibly never found, slowly starving and thirsty for water. How ironic that we’re in a well. It’s mocking us. This is how dry our mouths will get, and then we’ll be breathing hard, using our last breaths to curse Charlie and those two creepy guys.”

“You’re making me feel really depressed right now,” she admitted.

“Sorry, but when I’m in a hard situation, my mind rushes with all of these possible scenarios.”

“Unfortunately for us, your possible scenario might turn into reality. But we have to keep fighting. If for some reason, someone comes here, we need to be prepared to call for help.”

“I’m not letting my guard down. We have to get out of here, one way or another,” I said.

“That’s good. We need to stay strong and have faith. Just hope for the best.”

Shadow’s POV:

It’s been hours.

Luna and my mom aren’t back yet.

I tried to contact them, but there was no answer.

“Son, I’m getting really worried,” Dad said.

“Yeah, me too,” I replied, “They should’ve been back by now.”

“I have a bad feeling about this.”

“So you have no idea where they might have gone?”

“No clue whatsoever. They just went dress shopping. I called the shop, and the saleswoman told me that they left.”

“Should we call the police?”

“Maybe we should—”

I was interrupted when my phone rang.

It was an unknown number.

“Um, hello?”

“I know where they are.”

“What? Who is this?”

“Just meet me in the park in twenty minutes. I assure you that you’ll be safe.”

“Melody, is that you?” I asked, listening intently to her voice.

“Just meet me there.”

And the line went dead.

“What was that about?” Dad asked.

“Get in the car. We’re going to the park,” I informed him.

“But why?” he asked.

“Just hurry. I have a feeling this is urgent. We might be one step closer to finding out where Mom and Luna are.”

Reg. POV:

“How long have we been here, an hour?” I asked.

“Like fifteen minutes,” Lorraine answered, looking at her watch.

“Well, it feels like an hour.”

“Luna, you’re a fighter, and I know it. You’re a determined person, and it makes me feel really bad to have to watch you sulk.”

“I’m sorry. I guess being trapped in a well is getting to me.”

“Stay strong, sweetie. We’ll get out of here.”

“Will we? Will we, really? How are we supposed to get out if no one knows we’re in here?!”

“Just breathe, sweetie. Just breathe and relax.”

“How can you be so calm?”

“It’s my job as a mother. In order to protect my son’s happiness, I need to protect the one thing that makes him happy.”

“And it’s my job to be a good bride-to-be, so I need to protect my future husband’s mother. After all, you’ve been so good to me. Your family has been very nice to me.”

Shadow’s POV:

Dad and I walked around the park, and just as I suspected Melody approached us.

“What’s up with the outfit? Oversized shades and dark blue hoodie…and your hair is tied back so it can’t be seen through your hood.”

“I shouldn’t be here right now. You’re lucky I have a conscience. Where’s your car?”

“It’s parked across the street.”

“Come on,” she said and started walking.

We trailed behind her.

We reached the car and she held out her hand.

“Keys,” she requested.

“No, I’m not letting you drive my car.”

“If you care about Luna and your mother, you’ll give me the keys.”

“Wait, you know where they are?” Dad asked.

She nodded. “Now, give me the keys. I’m driving.”

I hesitantly handed the keys to her. “This better not be a trick, or you’ll regret it.”

“Just trust me. I’ve done a lot of underhanded things in my life, but this isn’t one of them. I’m honestly trying to help.”

She seemed serious, so I signaled my dad to get into the car.
