India, the sacred land. The land of temples. The land where young girls are treated as incarnation of goddess Durga. They are worshipped during Dussera, given gifts to, their feet washed, asked for blessing. Temples, the purest place on earth. No girl who's bleeding is let in, for they don't tolerate even a tiny speck of impurity. Such is the purity of a temple. Such is the glory of Hinduism. Such sacred a land is India.
A land where the reason for their own existence, a girl's menstruation is considered impure, but raping an innocent girl whom they ought to treat as a goddess is considered pure. Is it pure to rape a goddess, that too in a temple?
I remember how much I loved navaratris as a kid. I was about eight years old when I used to go for kanya pujas. I remember how Aunties used to touch my feet, take my blessings n give me gifts. They told us that we were goddesses. I enjoyed the privilege I used to get in those days. And now I hear that an eight years old girl is raped and brutally murdered. Yet nobody really gives a damn to that innocent's plight. Some are marketing this mishap with hashtags until this becomes an old news and then again start preaching about their religion and community.
Myself and millions of girls see ourselves in those victims. Everybody has their turn. Today was theirs. Tomorrow will be mine. The day after tomorrow, your mother and the day next, your sister will become a prey to this evil. If you hesitate to react today, I'm sure this will be the fate of every girl taking birth on this earth. Nobody will be spared. We don't want a life like boys, but a life like humans which only boys have access to. We want to be capable enough to take care of our needs without fear. We only want to live with the dignity we deserve.
