I yawned as I walked down the stairs of Bryan’s old home. Bryan waited for me at the bottom of the stairs. He tossed me my Python and I holstered it. I had my AKM in hand, while Bryan had his trusty Para P-14-45 and an M16 A3 with rifle sights and a with a drum. We walked out the door and as we headed to the barn, where we had hung out when we were still kids, I thought back to the events that had led us here. We had been found by the Division which was a military group formed for such an event as the apocalypse. They let us join and after a few years, when we were 17, their former base was overrun by zombies. We had fled and stumbled upon Bryan's dad's house. And then it became the new base of operations. A couple days later we were ordered to take the barn. While just outside the base, the area was infested with walkers and rebels. Just a day before today we had sent word to Monarch Solutions , a private company backed by the government, who said they would come and support the Division in operations to attack Rebel held positions. We were assigned to Reaper squad, where we had risen through the ranks, you eventually becoming Reaper 1 and 2 (I was 2). At the base were Alpha and Beta squads, holed up in a barn complex across the street. They were the new guys and thought they were tough shit. They had great accommodations and even vehicles. Housed with them were a Delta and Echo squads, more disciplined and more experienced soldiers. There were three elite squads Reaper, Tango, and Hornet. Tango was on advance recon, and Hornet squad was with Monarch. We walked up the road to the barn. Bryan was lugging the utility bag so I was traveling light. We finally reached the barn and climbed up. A few Division soldiers were talking amongst themselves as we reached our balcony. It felt good to be back, but defenses were lacking severely. We had met plenty of new friends, such as Charlie, who was tall and had curly black hair. I had also started dating Lauren as we had seen her again and Bryan had found one of his friends, who I could tell liked him, from elementary school. Down below us the other soldiers were working on bolstering the barns defenses. We set to work beside them moving barricades. Finishing the back entrance, we moved on to a side room where there was another opening. After filling the barricade with water Bryan and I lifted the heavy object and began moving it. The muscles in our arms bristled as we moved the barricade and filled the opening. As we set it down I noticed Lauren was watching. Bryan tapped my shoulder with his fist and started working again. I walked over to Lauren and wiped the sweat off my head.
“Hey,” I said
“Hey,” She replied, “working hard I see.”
“You bet,” I answered, “what are you doing here?”
“Just thought I'd stop by,” Lauren parted her hair.
“Well I got to get back to work,” I told her, “I’ll come find you when we're done.”
“Alright,” She smiled and left. I walked into the milking parlor where Bryan was. He was watching a girl named Lauren Bennett.
“Whatcha looking at?” I asked him.
“The hot girl in front of me,” Bryan replied.
I shook my head, “Doesn’t surprise me.”
He laughed and started to say something until four soldiers rushed into the barn. They were shouting about an attack. Before I had time to think gunfire erupted around us. Bryan started firing into the attackers and pushed me towards the balcony. I raced up the ladder and grabbed my AKM. Bryan stayed in the lower while I covered him from an opening in the balcony. The attackers looked like a raider gang. We got attacked by many enemies, but they were the most common and most annoying. I reeled back as bullets smacked the wood where I was standing. I popped out again and killed three as Bryan dropped another. They slowly pulled back, but we could see them take up positions to the east, north, and west ends of the barn which were all situated about half a mile away at each end.
“RPG!” Someone shouted. I ducked as the missile flew into the milking parlor. I jumped down to see Bryan was alright. Another projectile screeched in and exploded violently. We started racing for the hay before a third RPG blew up behind us. Bryan was thrown several feet away and I was launched into the atrium. Bryan was sitting behind a hay bale and he pulled out his radio.
“This is Reaper 1, we are under attack,” He shouted. I could already see reinforcements coming up the road and the field. He got no response, but back up had already arrived. I moved over to where he was and started firing with him. After about 10 minutes the fighting was over. We climbed back up to the hay and saw bodies everywhere.
