I've been an orphan for as long as I can remember. My parents died in a car accident when I was 18 months old. I never had any family besides them so I've been an orphan for 14 years. I'm 15 now and I've lost hope on ever being adopted. My name is Mackenzie Taylor. I was born in Susquehanna, Pennsylvania. When my parents died I was moved to this orphanage. A small orphanage in the heart of Susquehanna. I've never had any friends outside the orphanage and I'm rarely ever able to leave. The only time I leave is when I go to the park down the street. I've never been outside of Susquehanna, unless it when I was a newborn. We have a teacher at the orphanage that teaches us. There are 13 orphans here, counting me. 5 girls and 8 boys. My friend, Hadley and I are the oldest.
One day I went walking in the park. It was March and I had a lot on my mind. I wasn't watching where I was going and all of a sudden I bumped into someone. It was a guy who looked a couple years older than me. He had brownish-blonde curly hair and he was a a few inches taller than me. When he looked at me he smiled and said, "Hey. Sorry, I wasn't paying attention to where I was going."
"No problem. Neither was I." I replied.
He laughed. "My name's Jack."
"Nice to meet you, Jack. My name is Mackenzie."
"What a beautiful name. Are you from here?"
"Thanks and yes. I live just down the street."
"Oh ok. I was wondering because I don't think I've seen you before, and I always notice pretty girls like you."
I blushed, "I'm an orphan. That's why you never see me."
"Oh ok. How old are you?"
"15. You?"
"I'm 18."
"Cool."
"So um, do you have a phone?"
"No. There's a phone at the orphanage that I can use though."
"Cool. What's the number, so I can call you?"
Jack got out his phone.
"It's 570-674-9320."
"Ok. I hope it's ok that I call you."
"I'm fine with it."
"Great cause I'd really like to get to know you better. You seem pretty cool."
"Thanks. You do to."
We continued talking and it was great to finally meet someone outside the orphanage. We had a lot of things in common too. We both loved music and playing basketball. For the first time in a long time I actually felt truly happy.
He called me that night and we talked on the phone for two hours. After we got off the phone I went to eat supper. When I got done I went to the girls room and turned on the radio. They started playing a new song called Trust Fund Baby. In the middle of the song Hadley came in.
She said, "Ooo turn it up I love this song. It's by Why Don't We."
I replied, "Oh my gosh, why are you so obsessed with this band?"
"First of all I love their songs and second of all they are super cute."
I rolled my eyes.
"It is a good song, but seriously you need some help. Your obsessed with these guys and you don't even know them."
"Hey, don't judge me, ok?"
"I'm already judging."
"Whatever. What did you today?"
"I met this guy named Jack. He's 18."
"Oh my gosh! There's a guy named Jack in Why Don't We!"
"Oh don't get ahead of yourself. Jack is popular name"
"Yeah, But that would be cool."
