Donuts work a treat until your hair gets too long :(

Plan A:
Use a medium sized donut
Result:
A pretty bun but 5 layers of spirals wrapped around the base and - wait - where did all your bobby pins go?

Plan B:
Use a large donut
Result:
The bun is as big as your head and you might as well have a hair halo, there is also that teeny tiny problem of where to place it.  On the top of your head it could look silly; at the back of your head it will tip downward.

~~~*~~~
Trust me, I feel for anyone who needs to put their hair in an immaculate bun for dance/gymnastics etc. I've been there.
Do not fear for I HAVE A SOLUTION!!!
Assuming you can French plait...
^ Use a medium sized donut and make a bun as usual.
^ Then take the loose strands -starting at the bottom- into a French plait.
^ Make sure the plait is as tight as possible to keep it secure.
^ Once you run out of hair to add, plait normally to the end, secure with a
    small bobble/loom band and pin around the base of your bun (like the
    spirals).
