Better

It was months (again) before I saw her, and again I thought I never would.

Ally had told me about how myths and legends got it right when they said that the only way to kill a vampire is with a stake, so anything else that would kill a human only knocks a vampire out for a few hours. The wolves had broken her neck, as well as Ally's, Dinah's and Normani's, in order to take her and get away. The girls couldn't go and find her because she's likely on 'wolf territory' and going there after the whole 'you broke the truce' situation would probably start another war.

There were three things they could've done with her, and two of them only made me fret. Therefore, I was hoping against hope that they'd chosen to heal her, to show mercy.

After the first month, I was still hopeful. After the second I was a little less so. After the third, I'd all but given up.

It was spring now, but it still wasn't all that sunny. Still, spring seemed to be holding that final ounce of hope in place, refusing to let it go, to let Lauren go just yet... and then it was rewarded.

"Hey." Ally grinned as she sat beside me on the hill outside where the girls always sat. It was more peaceful out there, I'd learned.

Oh yeah, since that day at the house the truce had been restored but I've been exempt from it, meaning I could still talk to the girls and Camila and her friends too, who I learned are almost all werewolves too.

"Hey, whats with the sunshine-smile?" I asked and the smile in question only grew.

"She's back." She answered and I frowned in confusion.

"What?"

"Lauren's back. She's back to normal and she's at the house."

I leapt to my feet and immediately started packing my lunch away.

"What are you doing?" She asked, and I looked up at her with my own wide smile.

"We've got an elongated lunch today because of freshman testing. You're taking me to the house."

...

"Lauren?" I burst into the room, looking from side to side until I saw the back of her in the kitchen. She quickly turned on her heels to see me, a red-stained rabbit in her hands and blood spilling down her chin as her eyes, surrounded with black now instead of red, went wide and she grinned. How I didn't gag at that I'm not entirely sure.

"That's a little gross," I commented, and she chuckled, looking down at the corpse in her hands.

"I'll be right back." She told me, and she was. A second or so later she was cleaned up and standing in front of me, now smiling broader than before.

"Hi." She smiled, and I couldn't help but giggle. To be fair, I barely even knew the girl and all that I knew of her was when she was affected by that addiction. I basically only knew her when she was high, or the equivalent. Still, I was ecstatic that she was back. I'd missed her in a weird way that had her taking over my thoughts almost every waking moment, but I never complained.

"Hi," I replied giddily and she pulled me into a tight hug. A chill ran through me but I'm not sure the goosebumps were caused by that.

"I'm usually a hugger." She explained when I hesitated before hugging back. Then I did just that though and let out a long breath that I might have been holding since I met her.

"So you're all better?" I questioned when she pulled away.

"Yeah- well, mostly. You... still smell incredible but I can fight it now." She took a deep breath, "You know how... if you really liked chocolate cake for example, and then you couldn't have it anymore; it'd still be tempting but you be able to not eat it, you know?"

"Yeah." I nodded and decided to change the subject, "Did you like chocolate cake?"

She laughed before nodding a little, "I think so."

I love her laugh.

Wait, what?

"So what now?" She asked when Ally came into the room, having been doing something in the dining room.

"I want to get to know more about you, and you... properly I mean," I suggested, or rather stated, and she smiled widely.

"First of all," I began, pressing thumb gently against the blackness around one eye and feeling it's a little warmer than the rest of her, "This is black now, instead of red. Why?"

"It's the animal blood, there's some sort of difference between the two to us. It's why you don't see a vampire fighting to get to a rabbit while you would see them kill one of their own if they were told they'd get to a human, and for some reason, it also changes that colour." She explained and her smile faltered, eyes becoming a little distant.

"Hey, it's okay." I offered and pulled her into another hug. She was quick to return it though softer than the last, and I heard Ally 'aww' from the sofa, "I trust you, Lauren. You know that, right?"

"You shouldn't." She shook her head but didn't let go of me, "You shouldn't trust me, I'm- I'm a monster." My eyes went wide.

"Shh. No, you're not, Lauren." Ally hushed and was next to Lauren in a heartbeat, smoothing her hair as I ran my hands up and down her back.

"Yes, I am." She growled and pushed off of my chest, walking quickly (though I could still see her, so I guess it was slowly) out of the room and up the stairs.

I looked over to Ally with a look that I hoped translated to 'Did I do something wrong?' but she just shook her head with a reassuring grin and followed the path that Lauren took.

I didn't know what to do, but I figured maybe they just needed some space so I sat on the sofa and waited for them to come back down.
