"The poetry contest deadline is today," the English teacher reminds us as Birdie and I head out the door for lunch.
"I submitted mine yesterday," Birdie says with a nod and smile.
"I submitted mine the day before that," I grin, nudging her in the ribs with my elbow. She laughs as the teacher smiles.
"I wish you both the best of luck," she says, her face nearly splitting with the size of her proud smile. "I found out today that the prize isn't just money, you also get published in a new poetry anthology for young adults!"
"Cool!" I say, fist-pumping. "I'll be famous."
